Show BEHEADED BY BUTCHERS. Horrible Fate of Kiigign Monaglian in the Recent Samoan Troubles. Auckland, N. Z., April 29. Particulars Particu-lars of the fightingin Samoa, contained in the advices received here from Apia under date of April 18, show that the battle between the friendly natives and the rebels took place at Vailelo, and that the latter lost 100 men killed and wounded. Further details of the deaths of Ensign En-sign J. R. Monaghan of the United States cruiser Philadelphia and Lieutenant Lieu-tenant P. V. Lansdale of the same vessel ves-sel have been received. They show that Monaghan was beheaded before he was dead. A deserter of the Mataafan forces says Monaghan and Lansdale were retreating when they were discovered dis-covered by a chief and his wife, who were looking for dead men. They gave the alarm, and Monaghan was shot while continuing the retreat. Later, it appears, the rebels returned and killed Lansdale. Monaghan fought until he was wounded and he was then beheaded. be-headed. The doctor's examination of the remains confirms the statement made. |
