Show 1 2 Yamal Exprm Friday, November 29, 1985 Area students invited to apply to Academies Crime dog McGruff joins Naples City Police Force McGruff, the crime fighting dog has joined forces with the Naples Police Department m bringing safety tips to school age children. The Naples City Police Department purchased the McGruff look alike which includes a mask and fur gloves from the crime prevention coalition. The funds for the McGruff suit were raised through a mud rally earlier in the summer that was sponsored by the police department and the Blazer Scouts Chief Everett Johnson said one of the main reasons the department decided to purchase the costume is because McGruff is widely used by the school system and national television Children recognize McGruff at a glance and are impressed by his crime fighting ability. Another major reason for the purchase is due to lack of available McGruff costumes owned by other law enforcement agencies in the state Johnson said McGruff is a very popular character and the suit is often out on loan to other agencies. McGruff is identified not only by his hairy appearance but also by his Columbo style trench coat and plaid pants McGruff offers children and parents safety tips on how to take a bite out of crime He offers children tips on how to say no to alcohol and drugs and to be wary of strangers Safe houses bearing a poster of McGruff are also available in the community. Most school age children are aware that if they have a problem on their way to or from school they can stop at a house with a McGruff sign and they will be Third District Congressman Howard Nielson is encouraging area high school seniors to submit applications for attendance at any of the five service academies nationwide. Deadline for the applications is December 31. Applications are available for the United States Military Academy in West Point, N Y.; the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo ; the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md ; the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N Y.; and the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Applicants must be nominated by a member of congress to be considered for admittance to all but the Coast Guard Academy. In order to be nominated to any of the academies, a young man or woman must be at least 17 years old but not more than 22 years old by July 1, 1986. Candidates should have a strong grade-poin- t average, good national test scores in the math and science areas, and an extracurricular involvement that indicates leadership safe. Utah Power and Light Co in the Ashley District has joined forces with the crime dog and are making their trucks part of the safe house programs. In the future, UP&L trucks will have a McGruff poster on their trucks to let children know they can turn to UP&L employees in an emergency or if problems arise on the way to and from school In addition to helping children, McGruff also helps adults by offering advice on ways to avoid becoming crime victims He has advocated Neighborhood Watches as one method to reduce crime McGruff advises adults to have secure locks placed on homes and( to make sure a home looks lived in even when the family is on vacation Officer Tim Fagen made his first appearance as McGruff before students at Naples Elementary The students were impressed with the lifesize addition of the crime fighter Officers plan to take McGruff into other schools and groups in the area. According to Nielson, service academies offer one of the best educations available in the country, with emphasis placed on career training in a numer of various fields m addition to military training, athletic involvement, and professional development The studentteacher ratio at the academies is usually about ten to one, he points out, affording the opportunity for intensive, personalized instruction not possible at most of this countrys colleges and universities. Other benefits of attendance at service academies, he says, include the opportunity to serve the country and the chance to learn discipline.
