An unofficial tally shows that Punches carried the pigskin 24 times. The Union score came shortly before the end of the first half. Gary Tassainer performed his usual fine job of quarterback and junior right halfback, Bill Pope put on a fine show of intercepting, catching and running. Pat Punches pulled off one touchdown shortly after the quarter began at Price and nabbed two more in the second. Bronco end, Bryce Redd, claimed their only success with 8:20 remaining in the third period. A 50 yard pass from Gary Tassainer was received by Chick Beynon at the midpoint of the fourth, to complete the afternoons scoring. 7. This writer Grua) (Corey understands that San Juan had only 34 yards total offense compared to the 294 yards gained by Uintah. Phil Johnson, John Shumway, Bill Lane Fletcher, Tommy Pope, Rick Thomas, Doug Hacking, Hawkins, Tassainer, Beynon, Kent Thomas and Joe Davis made up the fine Ute defensive team. Uintah competed in a state tournament game against Delta and the game was close, but the footballers from Vernal ended up on the losing side of the score. The story about the game, which was printed in the Vernal Express on November 19, 1964 is as follows: Snow, wind and mud put a sad damper on Uintahs hopes for the state championship as they fell to Delta Saturday, 13-- giving the Rabbits the right to play in the Class B semifinals this weekend. Pat Punches, Uintahs Mr. Touchdown, nabbed a score in the first quarter after a recovered Delta fumble and three plays. The reverse came true in the next period when Rabbit quarterback, Kent Turner, rambled over to tie the count Had the game ended in a tie, Delta would still have gone to the semifinals, for their yardage gained was far above that gained by the Utes. 6-- THE BALL is snared for a rebound by Daren Anderson, center, during basketball action Uintah High School. , The last four minutes held the real clincher. Kent Turner galloped to Uintahs seven-yar- line from d 50 yards away. He was thrown for a loss, but completed a good pass bringing them to the one yard line. Turner then sneaked over the TD and with a pass to Craig Greathouse, scored the extra point. The Uintah Utes of 1985 with new coach Hank Nawahine also had a good start similar to the 1964 team as record by they jumped out to a defeating Union, 20-- 0 and Carbon, 25-Dee Steinfeldt and Kyle White scored touchdowns on passes and Jon Nash added a touchdown on a running play in the game with Union. The Utes won five out of nine regular season games and lost four ball games. Three of the four losses were close setbacks, but the loss to Springville was a 46-- 0 rout of the Utes. Uintah recovered from the disappointing loss to Springville with four victories in a row. The Utes edged a team, Duchesne, 14-strong downed Payson, beat Spanish Fork in overtime, 0 and won the coin toss with Provo and Payson for fourth place in Region 8. The Utes jumped out to a 15-- 0 lead in the game with Payson and then the Lions rallied to tie up the contest at However, Uintah regained the lead when Kawiwa Teo returned the kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown with seven seconds left in the first half. Uintahs Utes added another touchdown on a pass catch by Mulville, but once again Payson tied up the score. However, Uintah broke the tie in the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Gordon Limb hit White in the end zone for the game winning touchdown. The Utes dropped behind 14-- to the Dons in Spanish Fork, but a touchdown pass catch with one second left by Mulville, touchdown by conversion by White and Steinfeldt in the third quarter brought the Utes within six points of the lead at tion, more posted property, and more gunners competing for each bird? And in most cases, fewer birds. The question is stacked, its true. The answer is that if you can outwit one rooster youre above average. In Wasatch County you wont find many cockerels, but there are birds along the swamps and bottomlands of the Duchesne River, and throughut Uintah County farmlands. One day I even spotted a ringneck at a relatively high elevation on Rock Creek at the mouth of the canyon. However, high and cold elevations are not favorite haunts of this Chinese import. If you can surprise a bird at the edge of a grain or corn field you might get him in the air. But these birds are no dummies, learning quickly they arent as likely to be seen (or shot at) if keeping their legs on the ground. A good dog will help put colorful targets in the air. Especially after the first half hour of the season when a pheasant is gaining a rapid education. In fact, Ive said it before: a male Phasianus colchicus is as smart when he knows hes being hunted as a bull elk. What is frustrating is that you can know he is underfoot, even having just seen him slip into a roadside patch of tumbleweed, yet you cant locate him. Thats the pheasant even when his emerald, turquoise, magenta, and orange doesnt mesh with background. Its a creature which has been known to hide (in the old days) in a row of beets. Pheasants have a tougher time of it today because most farmers wont ditch row, or leave them a weed-line- d fence cover. With the heat on economically these days, most landowners waste no space whatsoever. Even steep hillsides are plowed, leaving the bird with little or less habitat. As for helping your cause in the challenge, get in on the posted units, or ask tresspass permission now. A pheasant on public land is almost a rare and endangered species these days, with one possible exception: the state and federal waterfowl marshes. Roosters do get in such places. Fortunately, wise management has allowed these marshlands to remain open for ringnecks along with waterfowl. Check the proclamation for open (and early closures) seasons near you. After first weekened shooting, pheasants sometimes get in the sagebrush and oak along the foothills. So often you will find more than California quail there. Always check river bottoms after the initial shooting, too. Then, too, if you havent been out after doves or other shotgun fare this fall, better get in a little practice on the skeet or backyard clay bird range. will put the discs up, or you can even get on target tossing up a clod of dirt. Better than heading for the hunt cold! Hand-throwe- rs This one brings hunter, landowner, and birds in close proximity, so be sure where you point that muzzle. If you want to be invited back, close gates, pick up litter, and avoid pushing livestock. Remember, that thousands of people wielding weapons are crowded into three per cent of Utahs land. That calls for some careful and sensitive outdoorsmanship. A 37-3- 26-2- 15-1- 5. 0 two-poi- nt 20-1- Uintah kept getting their chances, but they couldnt score. Finally the Utes came through when Limb tossed a 78 yard pass to Mulville, who scored a touchdown with 56 seconds left in the game and sent it into overalso scored a time.
