The Cougars fcacitic Scary Times Altamont enjoyed a 12 point lead in the second quarter over Union, Wednesday in Altamont and Wasatch owned a ten point lead late in the first half over Uintah in Vernal, Saturday. Wasatch and Altamont both had first half leads of four points and Union and Uintah fans were probably wondering if their favorite teams were going to go down to defeat. The fans had nothing to worry about as both Uintah and Union rallied in the second half for season opening triumphs. Uintah suffered through a fierce Wasatch outside shooting attack in the first half, but rallied for a 3 victory and Union beat Altamont, 66 to 59. tied up the game, but Altamont rallied for a five point lead. However, a field goal by Eddy Samuels cut the Altamont lead to three. Tracy Ross stole the inbound pass and put the ball through the hoop for two, which brought Union within one point of the lead. Ross missed a free throw, but Brent Jarrett popped in one out of two from the charity stripe for a tie. Jarrett made his second shot, but it was taken away on a lane violation. However, a field goal by Samuels gave Union the lead for good in the game. I tried to battle them and get the ball in for two points. I stuck in there and out powered them for the rebounds," commented Jarrett. We were man to man on them and Tracy Ross was right there for the ball and scored. We got it right back and I was open so I shot it in, stated Samuels. Our whole team work well together, stated Palmer. Weldon led the Uintah Utes with 22 points. Other starters, White added 9, Mulville, 8; Moheir, 8 and Palmer, 6. However, the big key to the win was the job by the Ute bench, which produced 20 points. Valton Mortenson scored 12 points. Nawahine added five and Anderson three. Lee Schulz didnt score any points, but he stole the ball a number of times and set up field goals by his Ute teammates. I had to go in there and do the best I could. We started keying on their hot shooters and got our hands in their face sooner. We concentrated heavy on their outside shooters cause they werent really going inside, commented Anderson. The Wasps turned in an amazing outside shooting show in the first half, but turned deep freezer cold in the second half and one of the Ute cagers, Mulville, remarked, We tried to get in their face with our hands and finally they started missing.
