Those are just a few of the prices on the Ranch Cate menu from the 1950s. The prices have gone up with the cost of living but the food is still as good and the service is just as friendly in this historical landmark on Vernals Main Street. The city has recently honored d the restaurant with an historical marker placed directly across the street from the eating establishment. In 1989, Grace Hall and Wanda Jackson put together the history of the restaurant and donated it to the Uintah County Librarys Regional History Center. Hall and Jackson wrote that in 1933 Warren "Fat" Belcher sold a cow and bought a hot dog stand on South Vernal Avenue. He wanted the stand moved onto Main Street where his mother owned some property. Being a rather resourceful gentleman, Belcher "bribed" George Ramsey with a jug of whiskey. Belcher went into business with Bud Markey, creating Vernal's first dtive in restaurant. They bought $! worth of hamburger at a time, grilled the burgers and sold them through a window. When Markey wanted out of the business, Belcher went into partnership with his wife, Daisey, naming their restaurant the "Grub Box." It was quickly the "Pig Stand" because of a pig that stood outside holding a sign that said, "Lets Eat." The business grew and the Belchers put in a counter, adding a stool or two as they could afford it. Eventually, they added tables and chairs to accommodate the workers who came in every morning for nick-nam- What CAN be picked up curbside: - Tree limbs no longer than 8 ft. their coffee. The name grew out of a love of gambling and was symbolized with a pair of dice on the marque. The Belchers are gone now but the tradition they started is carried on by their daughter Connie and her husband, Jerry Pope. They serve meals to a whole new generation of Vernal area residents and to a multitude of tourists who come to see the sights. The historical marker honoring the long history of the restaurant is now one of those sights.
