Show t Wednesday, May Obituaries Neal D. Barney Neal D. Barney, age 59, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008 after a longterm illness. Neal grew up in Lapoint where he had many friends and loved to hunt wildlife and artifacts. Neal's parents passed away while he was still very young during dur-ing that time he resided with his sisters. In the mid '60s he started to work at the old county hospital on 2 1st in SLC. Not long after, he accepted a job in Las Vegas Nev. There he met the first love of his life, a beautiful girl and they were then married. Shortly after they were married, he joined the Union. He also worked many construction jobs in the Vegas area. Neal loved his family and always al-ways returned home to be close and keep ties with them. The last three years of his life he lived in Vernal where he had made up his mind that this is were he wanted to spend the rest of his life. He was able to do carpentry wood work and landscaping which is what he has always enjoyed with family and friends such as mike and his wife and Darell Keiser. Neal was proceeded in death Phyllis Farnsworth Phyllis Anne Thunehorst Farnsworth passed away May 6, 2008 at her sister's home in Roosevelt. She was born May 16, 1945 in Holton, Maine, to John H. Thunehorst III and Catherine Clark Grant. She was married to Jesse James Bates and later divorced. She married Douglas Farnsworth and later divorced. Phyl's life was her horses and her job. She loved her horses like they were her kids, she enjoyed racing them and going to the races. She was involved with the racing association. She belonged to the Dinah Spurs Riding Club. She was a member of the Elks Lodge. She enjoyed educating her nieces and nephews about horses. She loved being with her friends and family, and stuffing Christmas stockings. She loved cooking at the Golden Age Cen- ' ter for years and the county jail. ' She also gave love and a helping hand freely. She never gave up or hardly ever gave in unless it was a good compromise. She finely made peace with her fears to go this one last journey of her life and slipped away peacefully with family and friends by her side. She is survived by sister, Melody (Gregg) Harmston of Roosevelt; brothers, John Henry (Leanna) Thunehorst IV of Farmcreek; Charles F. Thunehorst Thune-horst of Rock Springs, Wyo.; eight nephews and four nieces; 20 great-nephews; and great-nieces. great-nieces. She is preceded in death by parents, John Henry III and Catherine Thunehorst; one nephew; and one great nephew. She was born inMytonon Aug. 10, 1920 toHosea Lynn Lisonbee and Rachel Ostergaard. Her mother died in the Park City Hospital Hos-pital when she was 6 years old, leaving her and her two brothers, R.G. and Clyde (deceased).. Her father remarried May Lenore Robinson in 1929. They had two more daughters, Faye (Denneth) Goodrich (deceased) and Billie (Jack) Woods. Mother worked as a x-ray technician. She attended He-neger's He-neger's Business College. She would hitch-hike from Salt Lake to Duchesne to visit her family. In 1940 she married Ernest Arthur Winkler who preceded her in death on June 1, 1985. They were blessed with eight children, Denis (Rhonda) Winkler, Pat McRae, Douglas (deceased, 1987), Rachel (Gary) Gierhart, Verona (Steve) Rasmussen, Don, Ruth Ann (Glendon) Merrell and Duane. The thing she loved most was gathering her family together whenever she could. A grand reunion was held for the last several years when all her family fam-ily would join to celebrate their togetherness for three days, usually usu-ally on her birthday. Even with eight children, she had a unique way of making each of them feel Bruce Mortensen Marion Bruce Mortensen, our loving husband, dad, brother, grandpa and best friend, left us for a while on May 9, 2008. Bruce had a personality that everyone loved. His humor and friendliness made him a favorite among young and old. His work ethic was second to none. It was only for the last few years that Bruce was unable to work hard. This was a real problem for him, the only problem he couldn't solve! Bruce dearly loved his family. He loved to have them come to visit. He was never too busy for anyone. Dad loved Jazz games, visiting, making and fixing most anything, farming, cattle, horses, going to dinner, seafood, peanuts and coffee. Bruce was born in Emery Jan. 21, 1926 to Marion and Ella Mortensen. He married Ida Nielsen on July 23, 1948 in Salt Lake City. They were later sealed with their children in the Manti Wow! Although mother worked at various times out side her home, she saw her children and grandchildren as her life's work and greatest happiness. She served as Relief Society president in Ashley Ward and served many other calling during the time the family lived there. She had 32 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Grandma was' always very loved and will be deeply missed. The family extends a special thanks to the kind efforts of the members of the Good Shepherd Hospice. Bruce and Ida have three children and their spouses. Greg (Liz) Mortensen of Seattle Wa., Scott (Kris) Mortensen of Emery Em-ery and Teresa (Robert) Kay of Vernal. Bruce was the third child of five. Lavona (Lynn) Williams, Olene (Robert) Anderson, Blaine (Ellen) Mortensen and Buddyr Lee were Bruce's siblings. Bruce had many fond memories of his childhood and his life. All in All, Bruce had a great life! One to be very proud of! Bruce is survived by wife, Ida; three children; nine grandchildren; grandchil-dren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters; and his brother, Bud. Dad's family and friends were his life. Joseph Merkley In loving memory of Joseph Ray "Elray" Merkley. born in Sandy on March 17, 1942. the son of Joseph Arvid and Oral Merkley. Ray passed away unexpectedly un-expectedly May 12, 2008 to join his Father in Heaven and loved ones. He married his eternal sweetheart Ravae Roberts on Nov. 26, 1977 and solemnized their marriage in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 16, 1979 for time and all eternity. Ray was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a love for family history. He excelled in wrestling for the Uintah High School Wrestling team and loved racing rac-ing motorcycles and riding in "The Honda Hills". He was a very smart and accomplished businessman. Between owning and operating motorcycle shops, a gas station convenience store and operating heavy machinery, he and his son Scott ventured into business together forming Merkley Oil Field Service, where he worked until his retirement in 2006. From here is when his long time dream of operating his own full time farm began to blossom. He had a love for tinkering and working on tractors and other farm equipment, as well as cutting cut-ting and bailing hay, where he spent numerous hours shaping and maintaining his dream to what is now appropriately called "Green Acres" by family and friends. Ray was a very driven and talented man, not only was he successful throughout his careers, ca-reers, but as a licensed electrician and an achieved homebuilder. He had many hobbies, but his true passion was for the outdoors. His love for fishing, camping, hunting and anything outside Gladys Slaugh Our beloved mother, and grandmother Gladys Fisher Slaugh, 81 of Vernal, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008 at Ashley Re-gional-H8-4 complications complica-tions from a long illness. Gladys was born to James and Kunigunda Fisher May, 29, 1926 in the Uintah Basin where she lived her entire life. She married mar-ried Lloyd LaDell Slaugh July 20, 1942 and had five children: Jenean (deceased), Gary LaDell (deceased), Sandra Jean, Ted F and Craig Lee. She loved to spend time with family, sit and watch birds, fish, camp, work in her yard, crotchet, quilt and can vegetables. Gladys was survived by daughter-in-law (wife of Gary), The Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining to meet in Roosevelt Salt Lake City, Utah. The Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining Min-ing will meet in regular session of Wednesday, may 21 in the Council Chambers of the Roosevelt Roos-evelt Municipal Building, 255 South State Street, in Roosevelt. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. with an informal presentation from the director of DOGM and for formal agenda will follow at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Whether it was building up his tractor collection and working work-ing on his farm or out fishing, camping and spending quality time with his special wife, family and friends, Ray spent his last days happy and content knowing he was living his dreams.
