Ouray Wildlife Refuge is filled with wildlife viewing opportunities Ouray National Wildlife Refuge is southwest of Vernal. To get there travel 14 miles on west Highway 40 to the Ouray turnoff, turn south on Highway 88 and travel 14 miles to the refuge entrance. The hours of operation for the Refuge are one hour prior to sunrise sun-rise through one hour past sunset. After the hours of operation, an automatic gate will close. Because animals are most active right before sunrise, and right after sunset, those are the best times to visit. The best seasons for wildlife viewing are spring and fall right before, and right after migration for the winter. Although Ouray National Wildlife Refuge is mostly for birds, other wildlife can be found as well. Recreational activities in the Refuge include hiking, mountain biking, fishing on the river, and hunting during appropriate seasons.
