The Utes will defend their Steamboat Steam-boat Springs Tournament title, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Uintah captured second place at the 3-A state tournament tourna-ment in Utah and has won 15 state wrestling titles. "Our wrestlers trained for a week on their own and we had a good workout, Monday. We have a lot of seniors in our starting lineup. We have good experience returning and a good bunch of sophomores coming up. We've have some good numbers and some good athletes," stated Ed Johnson, head wrestling coach at Uintah High School. Johnson's assistant assis-tant coaches this year will be Lyle Gillman and Steve Scott. The Uintah Utes finished second to Spanish Fork in the 1984 3-A state meet and had a number of state placers returning for this season. Ryan Siddoway, an almost two-time state champion, is back this year. Siddoway placed first last year at 105 . pounds and nabbed second place at 98 pounds in 1983. Siddoway and his opponent op-ponent were tied after three rounds and his opponent won the 98 pound crown on a 1-0 win in overtime. Joe Newell garnered second place in 1984 at 126 pounds and the senior is back at the same weight class again. Mike Smith garnered third place last year at 132 pounds and will start the season at 138 pounds. Mike Slaugh captured fourth place at 185 pounds last year and is back at the same weight again. Gary Murray finished in fifth place last year and will be wrestling once again at 155 pounds. The Utes have five returning state placers and all five are seniors. The Uintah Utes also have four wrestlers returning in Darren Johnson, Matt Sunkees, George Cook and David Gurr, who competed in the state meet last year, but did not place. Sunkees is returning to his 'same weight class of last year at heavyweight. Cook has moved from 138 to 145 and Johnson has gone from 98 to 105 pounds. Gurr has moved from 119 to 132 pounds. Sunkees and Cook won matches for the Utes last year at the state meet and Gurr and Johnson lost a number of close contests. con-tests. Other wrestlers returning with varsity var-sity experience are Craig Funk, 132; Richard Horrocks, 112; Ken Campbell, Camp-bell, 145; Rod Hilkey, 167 and Rick Porter, 185. Funk started matches as a sophomore and junior and Campbell Camp-bell gained a number of starts. Porter, Hilkey and Horrocks started at least one varsity match. Funk, Hilkey, Porter and Campbell are seniors. "Hilkey will be battling Trent Horrocks Hor-rocks and Clark Barker for the 167 varsity position and junior Johnson and senior Shelton Humphries will clash for the 105 starting spot. Sophomores, Kyle Smuin and Ronnie Shanks are battling for the 98 varsity position," remarked Johnson. Smuin and Shanks are at 98 pounds and 105 pound tusslers are Johnson, Humphries, Mike Caldwell and John Downard. Wrestlers at 112 pounds are Richard Horrocks, Scott Rohn, a transfer from Las Vegas and Mike Williams. 119 pounders are Siddoway, Sid-doway, Keith Klein, Max Merkley and Blake Horrocks. Uintah's 126 pounders are Newell, Bart Huber, Kenny Andrews, Dirk Whiting and Jim Merkley. Funk, Gurr, Duane Powell, Dan Stewart and Wade Rob-bins Rob-bins are at 132 pounds and 138 pounders are Smith, Rick Powell, Mitch Hall, Durk Slade and Jim Snodgrass. 145 pounders are Cook, Campbell, Troy Roberts and Jody Card and 155 pounders are Murray, Greg Cobbs, Russ Shaw and Troy Murray. 167 pounders are Hilkey, Horrocks and Barker. Slaugh, Porter and Steve Hatch are 185 pounders. Heavyweight wrestlers are Matt Sunkees, Shawn Johnson, Shayne Price, Derek Cross and Scott Simper. The Uintah Ute tusslers will compete com-pete in a JV Tournament, December 1 and varsity and junior varsity wrestling practice. Siddoway nabbed the 105 pound title last year and the Uintah Utes finished second behind Spanish Fork. teams from Uintah will host Rock Springs, December 6 and Brighton, December 8. Brighton is the defending defen-ding 4-A state champion. The Utes will battle Green River on the road in Wyoming, December 13 and will compete in the Rock Springs Tournament, Tourna-ment, December 14-15. Uintah's JV team will battle the Eagles in Duchesne, December 12. Uintah's junior varsity will take part in the Hayden JV Tournament, December 15 and Uintah will battle the Union Cougars in Roosevelt, December 19 and will clash with Orem, December 20 and Meeker, December 21 in away meets. The annual an-nual Alumni meet is set for December 26 at Uintah High School. The annual Uintah Tournament is set for January s and the Utes will host Duchesne, January 3. The Uintah Uin-tah team will battle the Bulldogs in Provo, January 9 and the annual Tournament of Champions is set for January 11 and 12. Teams that will compete in the tourney are Uintah, Spanish Fork, Wasatch, Fruita, Craig, Orem, Payson and Carbon. Uintah will battle Timpview on the road, January 17 and will compete in the West High School Panther Invitational, Invita-tional, January 18 and 19. The Utes will host American Fork, January 23 and will battle Mountain View in Vernal, Ver-nal, January 31. Uintah will take on the Vikings in Pleasant Grove, February 1. The sophomore region meet is set for February 2 and the region meet is scheduled for February 9 at Orem High School. The state meet will be held at Weber State College, February 14-16. The Uintah wrestling Utes have won state wrestling champions in 1958-59, 1968-73, 1975-80 and 1983. The Uintah Utes captured second places in 1964-67 and captured second place last year. Members of the team are Jill Ylincheta, Jonelle Shanks, Sharon Belless, Joan Dockery and Betty Anderson. Yours and Mine captured first place in the team scratch at 2625. Members of the team are Betty Johnson, Erma Casada, Jackie Hall, Kay Sulser and Janet Hatch. Pat Abplanalp and Cherie Peterson placed first in doubles handicap at 1411 and the second place doubles handicap crew consists of LuRae Burr and Lynette Clegg at 1327. The third place team was Jayleen Grant and Marylee Longhair at 1289. AN ESCAPE is what George Cook, a senior, is seeking during Uintah High School wrestling practice. The Utes have nine wrestlers returning who competed in the state meet last year. High School' schedule. Spanish Fork is the defending 3-A state champion and Wasatch won last year's 2-A title and most tussling teams will compete com-pete in the Tournament of Champions. Cham-pions. Other opponents in the tourney Fruita and Orem are former state champions. Rock Springs and Green River are former Wyoming state champs and Union High School is a former 2-A Utah state champ. Brighton is the defending 4-A champion cham-pion and Meeker is a former Colorado Col-orado state championship team. Duchesne is a former 1-A state champion cham-pion and Pleasant Grove is a former champion. '690. Joyleen Grant placed third at 676. Diane Peltier pocketed first place in the singles scratch at 572 and the all events handicap winner was Sharon Anderton at 2045. Carol Morales placed second at 199 and Joyleen Grant nabbed third at 1971. The all events scratch winner was Janet Hatch at 1660 and Diane Peltier placed second at 1640. Paulette Ray nabbed third at 1607. The high individual in-dividual handicap game was turned in by Cindy Scott at 306 and the high individual scratch game was gained by Peltier at 242. The high handicap series was garnered by Pat Abplanalp at 734 and Ray had the high individual series scratch at 596. The awards luncheon for the Vernal Ver-nal Womens Bowling Association's 23rd annual City tournament will beheld Saturday, December 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lamplighter. Reservation Reserva-tion must be made by December 5 with Betty Johnson at Dinah Bowl. Cost of the luncheon is $5.50. All first place winners should be at the Lamplighter by 1 p.m. to have pictures taken for the state book. This includes lady bowlers from both Ute Lanes and Dinah Bowl. i |
