Show Thursday, March 9, 1961 Page 2 Local Anything Goes The more I 'drive, the more 1 be- pome convinced that ninety nine percent of the drivers in Utah are a bunch Of inconsiderate, immature, and idiotic drivers. I say ninety-nin- e per cent because by some chance there might be one driver who knows what hes doing. It continues to amaze me that the people who are sane, sociable, well mannered individuals other times, become homicidal maniacs when they get behind the wheel of a car. Why is it that a man will hold a door open for a woman when hes afoot, and practically run her down with an automobile when he catches her in a pedestrian lane. Why is it that a man will always let a lady go first in a restaurant or public building and then cut in front of her to beat her to the next stop fight when theyre both in a car? There must be something about getting behind the wheel that brings out all the dormant, unsociable, savage instincts in a man. Servicemen News . . . Robert B. KAY We can pass and enforce a- thousand laws to make the highways safe. But until we grow up and act like mature adults when we get behind a wheel, we will still have slaughter and carnage on our highways. The dog eat dog, survival of the fittest, type of thinking is contagious. We drive the way we do because we think if we dont well never get to our destination. But good manners on the highway are contagious too. The next time youre at an intersection and you are tempted to be the first one thru it try a little experiment. Motion the other driver on and let him thru the intersection first. It will give you a good feeling. The other driver might drop dead of shock, but if he doesnt he might take the hint and be courteous to the next driver he meets. Try it and see what happens. I think youll be pleasantly surprised. Its simply a matter of hoping that ever driver will someday grow up and drive like a mature adult. Because in the final analysis we drive the way we do because weve simply not grown up. Were all acting like a bunch of children. We violate traffic laws because, like children, we want to see what we can get away with while Mommy isnt looking. But if Poppa (the policeman) catches us, then like little children, its never our fault and we try to place the blame on the other guy. To my knowledge, there has never been an accident where one party was innocent and the other guilty. Its amazing that in an accident involving two, three, or four cars, where its always the other guys fault. How typically childlike and immature. Mission (FHTNC) ALL STAR WESTERN BAND 4$ again.
