There was just too much in this show - even though it was a good one - for such a small space. Too many scenes, too many ensemble members, too many accents and too many attempts at too many genres of theatre left me overwhelmed. Despite the constant barrage of rambling musical numbers, fluctuating accents and sound effects that are reminiscent of a 10-pound gadfly, I found several per- formances very impressive. Elise Hardman as Alexandra Bergson gave me exactly what I wanted when I wanted it. When she entered with the rest of the ensemble, before she even said a word, I knew she had to be the protagonist. Her interpretation of Cather's American hero was peregrine and poignant, I was especially struck by the fearless freshman, Tanner Harmon, in the role of Frank Shabata. Although, to some in the audience he may seem artificial, no one. .can be that incredibly unhappy; he was true to his character in the novel and boldly created the opportunity for his wife, Marie, played by Penny Pendleton Omer, to escalate to the necessary quasi-madness in the last third of the show. The small roles of Amedee, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Bergson and Annie Lee contributed ,a needed lightness to the somewhat dark parts of the musical. These roles, though almost minute, truly are memorable. Perhaps Carl Linstrum, played by Alex Ungerman, would be acceptable to those who haven't read the novel. However, 1 just couldn't like Ungerman's interpretation. He was too outgoing, bright-tempered - just the opposite of the jpensive Carl that Cather created. The ensemble was well directed. The scene changes were flawless and the musical numbers, which had naught to do with the main characters, were watertight.
