With the strokeofapen,UVSC's future university status became official at a bill signing celebration Mar. 19. "No one in this room is going to forget where they were this day," Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. told a crowd of more than 1,000 comprised of students, faculty members and local residents assembled in the UVSC ballroom. Moments later, he signed the bill into effect. Green and yellow balloons fell from the ceiling and students began to chant, "UVU! UVU!" Bill SB70 will give UVSC university status on Jul. 1, 2008; it was passed unanimously by the State Senate in February. More than a dozen speakers shared their thoughts about UVSC obtaining university status and their memories of the college from past years. LDS church leader Thomas S. Monson said he attended the groundbreaking of the Orem campus in 1977. The church later built its Institute of Religion next to the college. "We knew this would be a university," Monson said. "I'm very pleased at what we have here, and it's only the beginning. I see a bright future for this institution." Although many now see a bright future for UVU, it was not always a clear vision. Jeff Alexander, a former member of the Utah Legislature, remembered that in the early 1990s, "you had to educate people, even me, about UVSC." "One former regent even suggested selling bus passes to Utah County students so they could attend the University of Utah. Today that isn't the case at all," See Governor* A3 The annual Miss UVSC Pageant is set to take place on Mar. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Ragan Theater. "Eleven contestants will compete before judges and an audience for the best display of service, talents and poise through on-stage talent, evening wear, swimwear and interview competitions," said Beka Grulich, coordinator of student activities. "Everything happens in front of the audience, except •a private interview." The winner will be crowned Miss UVSC and receive a $1,000 per semester scholarship for the next school year; her two attendants will each receive $500 per semester. Miss UVSC reigns for one year, during which time she appears at campus and local events to perform her talent and promote her platform. "Each contestant chooses their own platform depending on what they're passionate about," said Grulich, "Each girl will prepare a poster display about her platform, and that will be out in the lobby prior to the Miss UVSC pageant. They also did voiccover recordings talking about their platform and the service they've done. These will play while each girl walks across the stage in her evening wear." Last year's queen Nicole Warner will give the crown to the new Miss UVSC the night of the competition. Warner, who will graduate from UVSC in April with a degree in photography, worked during her reign to ease poverty in a poor community in Mexico by coordinating plumbing installation projects and collecting and donating clothing to the community's residents. Contestants will be judged by a group of live local judges, with one of the judges having little pageant background as to assure balance in the judges' panel. The Miss UVSC Pageant is one of 58 preliminary pageants for the Miss Utah Pageant. The winner of the Miss Utah Pageant competes in the Miss America Pageant. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at Campus Connection in the Sorensen Student Center or by calling (801)863-8797.
