Show /port/ B6 MONDAY • AUGUST 28 '2006 RSL club record winning Streak, playoff push Whitney Woodward Sports Writer Over 14,000 fans were on hand at Rice-Eccles Stadium, watching as a controversial goal by midfielder Chris Klein ended the first half of play giving Real Salt Lake a 1-0 lead and boosting their confidence to score two more in the second half to get a 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo. With this victory RSL added to its current club record of consecutive wins, which now stands at four games. Great passing and equally great defensive plays were major keys in the victory for RSL who remain in contention for the coveted final playoff spot in the Western conference. RSL is now only three points behind Colorado and two points behind Chivas in the league standings. RSL coach John Ellinger said, "We're getting closer," when asked about his clubs chances of making the playoffs. In a very lackluster performance by both teams in the first half of play, Houston was able to manage 7 total shots with two being on goal, while RSL took 6 total shots with 3 being on goal. Carey Talley split an assist with forward Jeff Cunningham three minutes into the first half stoppage time, allowing Klein to score. Klein's shot hit the crossbar, hounced almost straight down and looked to bounce near but not on the goal line, but the sideline official and the center referee ruled it a goal, much to the disapproval of Houston's coaching staff. The officials where escorted off the field by security after the first half. Dwayne De Rosario was also given a yellow card for his arguments with the officials. Asked about reviewing the play after the game Klein said, 'LI haven't seen a replay, but I don't know that I want to watch it anyway." Cunningham continues to play brilliantly as he notched two assists, and a goal in ihc contest. Cunningham has 15 goals and 11 assists on the season, and sits at fourth all time for eoals scored in the MLS with 88, tying retired DC United legend Roy Lassiter and just one shy of his career best in goals. RSL went into the locker room at the half with a very important 1-0 lead. Opening the second half Douglas Sequeira netted his first goal of the year, scoring on a beautiful pass from Cunningham in the 64th minute, just a few minutes after being substituted for Mehdi Ballouchy. Sequiera's shot spun just inside the far right post giving RSL a 2-0 advantage. The Dynamo got one back in the 73rd minute off a Brad Davis corner kick that ended up with Adrian Serioux putting a quick header past Goalie Scott Garlick. But it wasn't enough to defeat the redhot home side. Momentum in the game seemed to shift back to Houston with two RSL players being shown yellow cards. In the 77th minute Sequeria was shown a yellow card, and in the 78th minute Goalkeeper Scott Garlick was also shown a yellow card for wasting time, something he has done often this year when Real has the lead. Garlick will miss RSL's game against the New York Red Bulls as part of MLS disciplinary rules for too many yellow cards. Cunningham scored another RSL goal in the 82nd minute, closing the door on Houston's chances at a come from behind victory, and ensuring a RSL victory. Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear summed up his teams play by saying, "... as a team, we didn't play well. I don't think we deserved to win the game. But you have to give [Real] credit for playing with confidence." Reacting to a question after the game about accusations of selfish play, Cunningham said, "I may make some wrong decisions at times, but I can't be called selfish now. My focus right now is just to make the playoffs." RSL is the hottest team in the MLS right now, riding a five-game unbeaten streak . Forever is a long time to live with a mistake...
