The "back door1' for accessing WebCT is webct.uvsc.edu (no www). The user ID and password are the same as UVLink. Early Wednesday, the fight to log on to UVLink was first come, first serve. As the day and problem progressed, a limit was set on the amount of users allowed on UVLink in an attempt to manage the system traffic and requests. Anyone wanting to access UVLink at this time was then "put in cue" until another user logged off. Dave Tobler, a UVSC UVLink administrator, explained that something in UVLink, most likely the front end of banner online services, was bottlenecking because too many users were logging on and using the same features at once, congesting the system. Comparing it to a freeway traffic jam, Tobler said that with too many people attempting to progress at the same time, the system will slow down and only a few are let through. "We know the system is jamming up somewhere, we just need to figure out where," said Tobler. "The only way to fix a traffic jam is to add more lanes; we now know we need to get more hardware for UVLink to run smoother and we will have that done once we find the source of the problem." It was estimated by a UVSC Information Technology Technician that at one point 900 students, were trying to access the same service at the same time. This isn't the first time UVLink failed in one of the schools most crucial moments. The first day of school last year met students with a similar occurrence. However, UVLink is a relatively new operation to UVSC, and, it seems, UVLink administrators are still trying to figure out how to improve it as time goes on. Tobler said the first day or two after school starts is usually the busiest for UVLink, however, these complications were not anticipated. Additionally, it is thought that the expanding use of UVSC s new wireless Internet service could be a participating factor in the difficulties. UVLink administrators stated these system complications were a volume only issue and that with the addition of new hardware the system's ability to expedite as many users as possible will be increased. \ Wanna drink with the best? Summer's Hottest Class Jason Pyles News Writer UVSC and the Utah Firt and Rescue Academy (UFRA) hosted the 2006 Summer Fire School on August 18' and 19. Randy Willden, Public Information Officer told The College Times that the purpose of the Fire School is to offer classes that fire fighting personnel could not regularly receive. Willden said, 'This is our 40th Summer Fire School. We run it every year in August, and we invite fire fighters from all over the state. Currently, we have about 570 students registered, which is our biggest turnout ever." "We brought in instructors from all over the country," Willden said. "For example, one of the instructors is Vince Dunn, a retired Deputy Chief from the New York Fire Department (FDNY). He's talking to our fire fighters about 'Fire Fighter Safety and Survival' —if you want to talk to a guy who knows about fire fighting, talk to a New York Deputy Fire Chief," Willden said. Ryan Frandsen of the South Davis Metro Fire Agency was a student who attended classes on Saturday. He said, "This weekend I'm taking a class on Geriatric Emergency Medical Services. He currently trains and consults with organizations on design and strategy issues and assists them in developing peer-based decisionmaking and problem solving competencies. Nielsen's ,book, 'The Myth of Leadership: Creating Leaderless Organizations" presents an entirely different idea on leadership, one in which all voices are included and represented, arguing that this is truer to de- mocracy and closer to what existed in ancient Greece than the democracy we have now. "The idea is'that everyone has their leadership skills and government should be more communal than hierarchical," explained David R. Keller, director of the Center for the Study of Ethics. "Government should be egalitarian where leadership is based on equality - you and I can have a voice and governance is grounded at the community level." |
