UVU makes final becoming a v Utah Valley State College will officially become Utah Valley University July 1, 2008. Senate Bill 70, to change UVSC to UVU, passed unanimously in the House and Senate Feb. 27. Governor Huntsman will be on UVSC's campus March 19 to sign the bill into law. "Students at this school deserve to have the University on their diplomas," said Andrew Stone, Student Body President, already donning a "Utah Valley University" t-shirt. "I hope students are excited about the added prestige. We're really excited." "The vote is a reflection of the general consensus that UVSC is ready to meet the challenge of serving as a regional state university," Sederburg said. "It is a credit to the UVSC community; the faculty, staff, students, parents, and other supporters that the state recognizes our readiness." As part of SB-70 UVSC was asking the state legislature for an additional $10 million in fund- step towards university ing to achieve university status, however the school was only granted $8 million. But it is not expected that this difference in funding will halt or differ UVSC's progress toward becoming a university. 'The $8 million we're receiving speaks to the fact that UVSC is ready to become a university, and it puts things in perspective," said UVSC President Bill Sederburg. "We will be able to come up with the extra $2 million." With the $8 million one of the schools biggest priorities is to reduce adjunct faculty, hire more full-time faculty, and increase the number of student advisors. According to an email sent by Sederburg following the senate vote, chief sponsor and senate president John Valentine presided over a debate where floor sponsor Senator Kurt Bramble described in detail the readiness of UVSC.
