Softball swept in Norman UVSC softball led the 14th ranked team in the country 7-2 after the first inning.* but still dropped all four games of the OU/Fort Worth Invitational against both Oklahoma and North Texas. In the first of two contests against the Sooners, UV maintained their lead all the way into the sixth inning, before Oklahoma scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and 10 more in the seventh to destroy the Wolverines 19-7. The first seven Wolverine batters reached base before Oklahoma finally recorded their first out of the game. UV scored on a couple bases-loaded walks to tie the score at two, and the huge Wolverine first was capped after Kaeleigh Forsyth crushed a grand slam over the right field fence. However. Utah Valley didn't score another run the rest of the way. The Sooners hung around before taking the lead for good with two homeruns in the sixth. UV starter Heidi Boyer wore down in the final inning as Oklahoma exploded in the seventh inning to put the game well out of reach. Against North Texas, UV starter Jackie Roberts struck out eight over eight innings, but did give up five runs to the Mean Green in the fifth. RBI singles by Chris Jimenez and Cari Hamilton cut their team's deficit to 5-4, and the Wolverines tied the game at five in the seventh after Jimenez cranked an RBI double into right field. North Texas would capitalize however with three runs in the eighth to win 8-5. In the second game with the Mean Green, UNT starter Kristina Fowler struck out six and pitched a complete game one-hitter in contribution to a 7-0 victory. And in the final with Oklahoma, the Wolverines gave up two unearned runs in the first inning which paved the way for 11 more Sooner runs, leading to an easy 14-1 drubbing. UVSC's record now stands at 5-14, and the Wolverines have dropped their last 11 games. The Wolverines play their first home series since February 1 lth against Nevada on March 21st. Lacrosse back to winning From LACROSSE .A10 ting right down the middle and Larson nicely dropped it into the back of the net. UVSC added two more insurance goals to command the victory and take a 2-0 record into division play. "It was a sloppy game, but we played well enough and pulled it out," said Perkins. The win breaks a two-game skid for the Wolverines, and continues to fuel expectations for a national championship. UVSC fell just short of winning nationals last year, losing in the final game. "This year we expect to win the division, set back to nationals and redeem ourselves because we lost last year," coach Perkins said in reference to his team's expectations for this year. "UVSC lacrosse has come a long way, and now we can play with anybody." The current third ranked San Diego Toreros topped the Wolverines 9-6 in, last year's national finals. UVSC finished the season ranked second and remained number two when the MDIA Division B top 25 pre-season poll came out last December. Every two months, the MDIA releases a new top 25 poll. The latest one released on March 9th had UVSC listed at number five. The Wolverines dropped three spots in the poll after starting the season just 1-2 with losses coming against Arizona and in-state opponent Utah. Despite the slow start, UVSC is expecting a solid season in division play, as well as the national tournament. EXIT-UNIVERSITY PARKWAY LOCATED DIRECTLY WEST OF UVSC, ACROSS 1-15. -*! |
