Show tjour compu/ AIO MONDAY-AUGUST 22-2005 Welcome to UVSC Welcome to our new students and welcome back to our continuing students! The beginning of an academic year brings with it a unique energy that can only be found on a college campus. College life affords students like you the opportunity to strive for and reach goals and milestones in your life. I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities available for you to gain knowledge and skills in your chosen field of study, and also participate in activities on campus. This will help you achieve success in your life, which is our theme for this year. We are proud of the recognition we received in our recent re-accreditation of being •'student-centered". The student is always foremost in our minds and as such we have implemented new programs and are in the planning stages for others. Over the past year a number of improvements have been made: A One-Stop shop, combining a variety of offices has been implemented. We are in the planning stages for a new Digital Learning Center. Nine four year degrees and three minors have been added in the past year. We have hired ten new advisors for this fall, plus eighty new faculty and staff. Our athletic programs continue to grow and improve as we move forward in Division I. There are on-going student events and academic activities planned for you throughout the year. Get involved, meet new people and enhance your college experience. I am interested in getting to know you and want to hear from you. Send me an e-mail or stop me in the hallway. We are looking forward to a great year! Sincerely, William A. Sederburg President President Sederburg can be reached at Byron Swogger/NetXNews After rwo years on the job President Sederburg has made some big changes, with Utah Valley State students being the biggest benefactors. Welcome back Wolverines! The excitement of a new year is upon us once again. Every year as we return back to school there is a new and unique feeling of anticipation and nervousness. We depart on a journey of another school year filled with long hours of studying coupled with the opportunity to educate our minds with knowledge that will assist us in our futures. During this school year I encourage you to get involved with our lively campus. It will not only bring the institution to life, but will give you the leadership experience that every college student needs and every employer looks for in a resume. There is something for everyone at Utah Valley State. Here is a breakdown of the four branches of Student Government that you could be involved with: STUDENT LIFE/ACTIVITIES is the branch that plans activities around campus, day, night, and on the weekends. Often referred to as the "Fun Group" they are responsible for the social activities and entertaining performances around campus. From kid's nights, comedy shows, and movie nights, to theatrical productions, talent shows, and dances; Student Life is responsible for sponsoring and aiding the productions of various activities. With over 70 clubs on campus, students have a variety of organizations that will appeal to them; however, starting a new club is always a convenient option. All it takes is 6 people, a full-time faculty/staff member, and a completed charter form. For more information visit the web page at www.uvsc.edu/clubs. ACADEMICS have the unique opportunity to work closely with the deans and department chairs in each school. As representatives of the student body, these students help make decisions concerning curriculum, policies, procedures, and the application of various disciplines around campus. With the focus of representing the students to faculty and staff while offering further scholastic opportunities outside of the classroom, the academic branch is looking to help develop UVSC into a full-fledged University. INDEPENDENT BRANCH focuses on representing the student body on a college, state and national level. Lobbying efforts are organized on all three levels in an effort to fight for, defend, and represent the students' interests. The Independent Branch also focuses on serving the local and state community through a variety of humanitarian efforts in an attempt to help those who could not otherwise help themselves. Within this branch various campus organizations are represented to aid in the process of unifying a large student community. We are always looking for motivated students who are interested in opportunities to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Student Government is here to help; if you have an issue that you need assistance with or want to get involved please stop by the offices located in the student center (SC 105). We look forward to serving you this year. Jared Sumsion Student Body President Your Campus Desk (801) 863-8617 Visit us online at www.netxnews.net Send story ideas to smilesissymelissy@yahoo.com |
