X - £ P V - I' ir'a h l JMk Rev Davis Convocation on Monday Nov 3 at noon in the Geary Theatre Fall convocation is the beginning of a new tradition here at CEU One of its purposes is to set the tone fn the academic year “Convocation is a time of tradition for opening a new academic year" said President GraceS Jones It is a time “for faculty and students to come celebrate and to hear and share a message about knowledge learning and the future" President Jones is excited for the first Convocation and hopes that it will go well and will become a tradition held at CEU for years to come The main purpose of the convocation is to honor the college's faculty and its honor students "We have over WX) scholar students this year” Jones mentioned Each one of these students are invited to participate in the processional march which begins at 11:43 am These students will sit in the seating area while the members of CEU's faculty will sit on (he stage Hie processional will start the Convocation then a few musical numbers will be performed by the CEU's band and choir The main part of the program will be a speech on service to the community given by the Rev France A Davis The Rev Davis was bom and reared on a Gough Georgia farm I le was the eighth of nine children to John II and Julia Davis He attended college at Tuskegce Institute and later became a jet mechanic in the US Air Force The Rev later earned degrees in Studies from Merritt College rhetoric from the University of See convocation on page 8 Afro-Americ- an Gov Leavitt stops by CEU to discuss virtural university 0 Leavitt will be on the College of Eastern Utah campus Monday Nov 10 from 10:30 1 1:30 Gov Michael am in the Geary Theatre Leavitt has been governor five years During this time in office he has held and class size reduction in public schools I Ic is working with other governors to establish the Western Governors University which will provide students with nunc options and flexibility and broader access to college through technology During his visit to the campus of CEU on Nov 10 he will be speaking on the Western Governor's University and his vision for higher education lie will he addressing those present while regional and national leadership roles lie has chaired (he Republican Governors' Association and die Western Gov- ernors' Association lie was president of the Council of Slate Governments lie is currently seated on the executive committee of the National Governors' Association and the Republican Governors' Association Along with holding various offices in Governor's Associations and Council’s he has also received various awards lie was recognized as the public official of the year for his efforts to improve health care in Utah with the American medical Association's Nathan Davis Award Leavitt's initiatives for education include Centennial Schools which return the power to parents and teachers at the local school level Highly Impacted Schools which provide special assistance to disadvantaged students also attending a C&l meeting held on the stage of the Geary during this time All faculty students and the public are invited to attend and bring any questions that they have |
