Show Carbon County native meets with the 17 scholarship recipients he funded by Amber Saupan editor College of Eastern Utah a special visit in Octo when Dr Geno Saccomanno came to visit Saccoinanno along with his wife and daughter came to the college to talk with 7 students w ho are attend-i- : gCEU on scholarships given to them Irom the Saccamanno Higher Education Foundation Dr Saccomanno grew up in Spring Glen where his parents owned a small farm During the Great Depression they sold peaches for 25 cents a bushel to folks in Spring Canyon He attended Carbon High School and went on to the University of Utah where he received his bachelor's degree in biology in 1940 Saccomanno had first planned on being a teacher but was advised to get more education He followed (his advice and in 1946 he earned a medical degree at St Louis University This degree would eventually lead Saccomanno to do research that would ultimately save the lives of The he initiated the practice of pathology at St Mary's and the Veterans Admin- istration hospitals Along with all this lie developed the laboratdty services in many western Colorado and eastern Utah hospitals including the Price City I lospital where he served as a visiting pathologist during the 1950s-60- s As a researcher Dr Saccomanno has accomplished a great deal fie developed an improved technique for processing sputum specimens which was published in 1963 This technique is now used by many hospitals throughout the United States and other countries Saccomanno in cooperation with other physicians researchers in California and Canada was involved in the development of the fluorescent bronchoscope This instrument has been successfully designed and is used 1 many lung cancer patients After this Saccomanno eventually settled in Grand J unction Colo There Dr Saccomano visits with two tcholarhlp recipients Including CEU student John Skiff Activites vice president calls for involvement by Karl Pahl ataff writer Enthusiasm dedication and outgoing best describes College of Eastern Utah's activities vice president Crystal Cox Cox is excited about serving and says her main goal is to inform the students of the activities so they will attend She said “I don't care how hard I have to work or how much it takes 1 just want people to come to activities because my job isn't anything if no one comes If they have a good time I don't care how hard I have to work" Cox wants more support than there has been at CEU in the past She is confident in the people on the committee she serves and knows they have a lot to offer CEU students To accomplish this Cox plans to put information on activities a week in advance with flyers placed in the CEU mailboxes calling extensions making posters to be hung in dorms and in college buildings As activities vice president Cox says her main responsibilities are to plan follow through supervise and make sure that everyone is having fun Cox has worked a lot with people through leadership positions and in sports Her experience with people has helped prepare her for the job so that she can deal with people and sec things from a variety of angles She says that she was raised to be responsible and self serv ing "My father stressed a good work ethic” A native of Huntington Utah she graduated in 1996 from Emery High School where she was a member of the volleyball and softball teams As aCEU sophomore she is working on her Crystal Cox shows service by example at a watermelon bust photo by Melanie Holdaway communication's business degree She has a love for computers and hopes to work with them in the future She spent her freshmen year taking classes in a music major that was her first love because of the power that it holds Her friends as well as her family are her support group She says that no matter what the situation she knows she can turn to them for help and staying positive She feels optimism is the key to being a good leader Cox has been working hard at planning worthwhile activities Some of the major activities are movie nights wave pool parties battle of the bands Tuesday Night Live a ragae band from San Diego and a live concert by the Jets When this school year is over she wants to look back and see that she left the school better than she found it She wants to make life at CEU more organized for the students “I just want to see that everyone had fun had a memorable year that people look back and say Wow!
