In reference to lynching ending or delaying one's of their history is as bad as it comes In effect their past is killed and their future is severely damaged uyou are a skeptic reader I know what youVe thinking: I want uenca lo be one unite and be the long sought after "melting pot" Yet this article u concentrating on our differences and for good reason How can we dream of being one when we do not know why or how we arediffaent? Americans are different In today's society we are allowing those dif-gfercnees to separate us This does not have to be the case We need to understand our differences so we are able to understand why we must come together In die past when were unem- so were When Caucasian Americans fought ployed end the so did Holocaust Our past and our her- Jo are our links future our to because no matter what comes be- itage only fore the word "American" we are all Americans Though we have had different pasts we are striving for the same to- ture The choice is yours and mine that is why I am lost in America Why can't I be different without being separate? Can I help you find ns ns ns Afncan-Amcrica- fan Recently in my sociology class my professor asked the students to complete an assignmentHe instrudcdfte males to come up with five reasons that men were uncteprivilegcd in today's society The women were to do the same The assignment was very bothersome There we were arguing privileges when so many Americans and even more people of other countries were being denied basic fundamental rights Privi- leges are benefits that come from outside circumstances Human rights and fundamental It seemed futile to me to be debating nrivi- re when leges equality still has not been realized And yet I suppose I did something out of the assignment Men and women are more than physically and emotionally different Different things are expected of us Our differences however can never be overcome our similarities As stated before Americans are being divided along ethnic lines In 1980 Hispanic Americans made up seven percent of the student body at the University of California at Los Angeles In 1993 that percentage has risen to 18 percent the largest minority at the university Earifcr this month Hispanic students picketed the university They had hoped Cultural Center Finarnul by this time to have a Mexican-Americshortcomings at the university caused the administration to renig on its something? promise The students became angry and minor riots occurred ns JWge an Mexican-American- s Asian-America- ns African-America- ns who admit their sexual status Fourthly the internal conflict that would occur within the military would be too disruptive Military men and women are forced to depend d on each other to the greatest extern If their is a lack of trust or Two will dwindle structure whole hatred among the cadets the hours after Bill Clinton announced his plans to lift the ban three marines beat up a homosexual outside a gay bar Although the marines were acquitted it serves as a reminder of the problems that would arise within the military should homosexuals be allowed to openly serve The simple truth is many servicemen and women do not trust or respect homosexuals Colonel Fred Peck of the US Marine Corps who last week announced that his son was a homosexual testified to the Senate subcommittee that he believed his son did not belong in the military because of the hatred and animosity he would cause Finally to those who would argue that the men and women who serve should only be judged on their conduct and not on their status I would like to remind them of the ban on Nazis serving in the military Are we prepared to lift the ban on people who are declared Nazis? After all it is simply their status It is a reminder that status can not be dissociated with conduct This is simply not the time to lift the ban on homosexuals There are a number of valid reasons why the ban should remain Perhaps some day the situation will change but for now I agree with the military experts who oppose lifting the ban These people are not homophobic they are men and women who have evaluated the situation more carefully than Clinton or the 36 percent of the population who support lifting the ban deep-seede- This letter concerns the slanderous article concerning the assistant (volunteer) baseball coach Dave Guymon I have been on the team for OptnlOn ldllOfHWHHMWHHMHNHWMHWMMWWHdlbSft AfClHlIOtO Sports Idttor ININNMIMNNIMlIHNINIINIIMIMNHIMIINIHHNNI Troy Doluca Chris Houck Assistant Sports IdUor RtotographMsJUsNnJohnsonhcnrisDoyMaikSMloyCMlgCMokiion Carmon Silva Graphic Doslgnor MIc hoot Clayton Illustrations JamlsonlrownAnnaAdalr Reporters BryanGordorvJennlierDuncanRandal Harrington MtekelsManton Cham L Pulsipher Ehha Ray Johnathan lradtordj)aicey Martinez Jock Otterslonnjrisfy Atwood Ryan Peacock and Dkfc Keyes Ariwhar — A Polster 1 1hEaolShSwaffleUiludMtfpubSocMonorih CoSag of Satan Utah andSpitedy eWw!huFKlnir1bliitaandta'BSotai OpWannea— dhtaSpubSonHonmoyor inoyrKStaldfofflcMopMonorcsUladrlrOtiohoataariludMetOfiKSr Itofogii offloe b located h Boom 134 at ffw Computer Butfnai Butt?- yvv '(vwyAvy t V AAA St emphasize that believe it is inappropriate behavior because that is the essence of newspapers-differin- g iewpoints So while I believe The Eagle was in error to withhold a signature the overall content of the letter was appropriate because it is one student's opinion If students can't express their views-bot- h positive and college then they have lost their fundamental right of nega-tive-abo- ut speech Richard Nielsen et (continued from pg 2) Gays (continued from pg 2) coach) I feel Guymon conducted himself in a way that is inappropriate for a representative of CEU I the 1992-9- 3' baseball season Dave Guymon has selflessly given his tune caring and effort to a team that has seemingly been abandoned by its school This year's team was outstanding and missed the play-off- s by only one game Coach Guymon was a vital reason that we sue- ceedod this year These derogatory few instances mentioned id the arti- were the only ones all year and who doesn't lose their temper once in a while After playing at CSI in the 1991-9- 2 season these few times when coach lost his temper seemed very mild Moreover the "outraged fan" should also add "coward" to their name Whoever kwas that wrote the article is part of the problem because they offer no solutions I personally owe Coach Guymon and Coach Paur a debt of gratitude for bringing me here from C3I and getting me a full nde to Mesa Stale next year They are both doing a great job and could use some more support instead of more heat S’01 Brad Hod i rresiuenl S Ddlr-NO- lI Dear Editor Are you planning on attending President's Ball? Or will you be going to the "Hey Mon' Bash?" I don't mean to confuse you there will be no choice for the students that have waited all year for There will be no Ball Residenfr ball is a formal dance that is a tradition at CEU Students have fun getting dates plans dresses and flowers in preparation for this big event Yet this big event must not be big enough for ASCEU to remember In place of the Ball the new student government has planned a free "Hey Mon' Bash" Rr the bash you won't have the pleasure of getting formal wear flowers finances or even a date Don't wony you won't be the only one that is not spending money ASCEU wont be either They have ran out of money to spend The President's Ball was scheduled for this evening and ASCEU has known all year that the dance is a tradition and scheduled for the closing of each year But this year they forgot to set aside some of their supposed $16000 activities budget for this event WHY? I am not complaining at the action that ASCEU has taken but rather the lack there of Why was there enough money to give away $2000 dollars during 2 weeks of activities and not enough to fulfill a scheduled dance? Maybe the $200 dollar give away was there way to go out with a "BANG" too bad the "BANG" was at the student's expense in more iMn one way All year long I have read edilori-als and listened to comments regvd-d- e ins ASCEU that were negative and my response was always in their favor I knew they were capable of fulfilling an activities calendar Now I am not sure why I have always supported TVy ranT even fulfill traditions Hopefully next year's officers will remember thinpas important as President's Ball and not let the activities well nindiy too soon Daroey Martinez Pnesi-denfsBa- lL |
