That is something unique that cannot be found many places The professors here touch every level of the teaching spectrum There are the by the bode die hards the relaxed the uptight and the eccentric but each one has something special to contribute to your education Yes even Dr Schampcl Despite his socialist attitude and constant bickering I know of no other professor that stresses the thought process like Dr Schampcl The student-relate- d faculty also contribute a ton of irreplaceable wisdom that is often overlooked Neil Warren and Scott Pulian have not only touched debater’s lives in terms of a winning squad but as friends There's not too many schools that can offer two men that bend ova backwards for their students And of course Susan Polsicr Susan does much more than advise the controversial staff of this publication or coach the cheerleaders she teaches everyone she comes into contact with that there is much more to life than taking the left overs Ha constant push towards freedom of speech and more importantly freedom of thought has allowed every student on this campus the ability ed make women more visible and a first lady more than the president's wife So many changes have occurcd from the While House to Greenpeace that this past year should not be overlooked Every two weeks when I sat down at the computa to write editorials I hoped to reach all of you in one way aanotha- -I hope I succeeded Two papers ago our editor-in-chiwalked out on us and hero you are reading the last issue of this year's Eagle I hope that this serves as a lesson in not giving up I honestly believe that if you have the smarts heart and determination you can accomplish anything If there is one thing 1 have learned at CEU it is hold on to your dreams don't let them die! If you do what do you have left? I have taken a philisophical approach to all my writing this year fa a reason you see there is more to life than memorized facts doing something because someone else told you to There is a reason and a goal fa every decision you make and I hope that reading my editorials has given you some type of insight at the "why" of things When we were young children we would aide a question and many times the response we would get was "because" 1 believe there is more to it than that and have tried to give depth to those things that arc happening around us I wish you all good luck in looking the depth in the that haunt because it when is the very root reach things you only you of things that you understand If any of you arc wondering why 1 am writing this read it again and again Not everything in this world is black and white and if you look you will find the meaning Whatever you do don't give up! I have ended many of my editorials with lyrics from the Indigo Girls and this is no exception "Watch the wizard behind the curtain" That is who counts adieu ef a fa Can gays uphold America's warfighting mentality? highest courts in the land have yet to resolve Are we ready to turn our defense machine into a playground of civil liberties and political guest editorialist Social problems must be undertaken by society first unless Should there be a ban on homosexuals serving openly in the we are willing to undermine the effectiveness of our defense military? Is the ban just another form of homophobia? And should few be a service were conduct? These of based on Secondly lifting the ban would violate the heterosexual servicemen just military solely and women's privacy We would be forcing our present servicemen and the questions I was forced to ask myself last week as I listened to Chaired Committee Service Senate Armed the to by women to do things like take showers with people that are sexually attestimony given tracted to them Just as we would neva allow men and women to bunk Sen Sam Nunn the committee is investigating the pros and cons of in forces ban armed on the homosexuals the Asl lifting serving togciha we should not allow homosexuals and heterosexuals to do the views their listened to both sides express the answers to my questions same To do this would violate the privacy of the cadets And because the servicemen and women's quality of life is paramount to their effecbecame notably clear I finally concluded that the military would be tiveness we can na impede on it in the name of fairness I the fact deliberated In ban remained the best served if the longer dearer my decision became: homosexuals have no place in the military Thirdly the political controversy that follows lifting the ban is inWhen making a decision regarding the military it is important to compatible with military objectives Homosexuals have a subculture this subculture would follow into the military The define the word military Webster's Dictionary defines military as military is not the place fa the gay and lesbian agenda to be fulfilled something that is "of pertaining to war" So when we discuss the about the gay and lesbian culture would disrupt the stria military we must keep in mind die purpose of the armed services that Many things which our armed forces follow including affiliation with guidelines of preparing fa and fighting wars This leads me to my fust reason NAM BLA (the North American Man Boy Love Association) which why homosexuals should not be allowed to serve openly The military is na a social laboratory It is rut the place to work the group "Queer Nation" strongly supports To say the homosexuals out societal problems especially problems that have not been solved by that will serve can divorce themselves from this subculture is strongly the public first By lifting the ban we are asking the military to expa-ime- naive Only homosexuals that did not proclaim their homosexuality and resolve problems that society has not undertaken To do this could avoid being categorized with this distina subculture But at the point they still remained fat the closet there would be no need to lift the the military’s primary purpose of warfighting Imagine detracts ban The ban is only concemod with fortxdding homosexuals to serve the miliuvy forced to make a decision on the issue of giving military (coatlautd on pg 3) benefits and pensions to homosexual partners This is an issue the by Vince Brown ca-rcetnes- well-defin- ed a nt ton s? Criticizing The Eagle Dear Opinion Edita As an alumnus of CEU and a previous sports editaof this papa I have been interested in the controversy ova the content of The Eagle Has The Eagle been fair in its reporting of the issues and events within CEU? Docs the administraASCEU have a right to cen-stion the content of the paper? It is important to understand that the fundamental puipose of the newspaper is to serve as the voice of the students and aa as a watchdog of the college The purpose is ikk to print articles telling only of the wonderful issues on campus The college employs an information advisa to write press releases fa that purpose The papa has an open-do- a polan submit icy Any person may opinion and any student may write fa the papa (provided they meet the prerequisite less we forget KKK) The papa welcomes at limes even begs fa opposing viewpoints That is the foundation of a democratic society If the paper’s content is governed ASCEU by the administration there would be no means to inform students of possible problems within the hierarchy of CEU Students would be subjected to the same form of media coverage that plagues many eastern block nations Freedom of the press is a basic part of a student's rights The Eagle has been criticized fa its reporting of the athletic department this year I found the May 4 unsigned Idler the editra regarding the assistant baseball coach Dave Guymon and his alleged inappropriate bchavira to be of particular interest As a senia journalism ma-j-a I believe that it is unethical to publish a Icticr to the edita without a signature If it were my decision to make I would have not published the letter without a signature because the athletic department and in particular Guymon have a right to express their views and know who disagrees with their views Fear of retaliation is not an acceptable excuse fa withholding a signa- a or a ture As a forma sports edita who has the field and listened lo Guymon I believe the content of the letter was appropriate 1 watched him on a numba of occasions cuss and swear at his players I also witnessed him criticize a coaching decision made by Dave Paur to players behind Paul’s back (a definite mistake fa an assistant (coatlaued oa pg 3) sat on |
