Defense was never a question CEU had a solid defense that would help them win the close games and had plenty of power at the plate to knock die ball out of the park but would the pitching come through? The Golden Eagles finished the season with a 2 region mark and did not this year I think it's safe to assume that qualify for the regional play-off- s their pitching never readied the level they had hoped for For a brief moment the season looked as if it might end on a positive note for CEU On Tuesday May 1 the Eagles swept Idaho St 4 A 4 with Tom Dimick and Shane Greenland picking up the wins But in their final four region match ups they were unable to come away 4 with wins against Dixie losing 7 despite homeruns by Dusty Moody Brett S eager and Will Scott Jeff Cisneros played a solid game well going 2 for 3 with a double and a triple The last two games of the season pitted them against Utah Valley Community College UVCC had an easy time of it walking away with two wins by a combined score of 304 Both games found the Wolverines up 10-- 0 by the third inning But in the first game the Eagles were able to do something that they could not do in the second game That is score! CEU battled back against UVCC in the final four innings of the game but still ended up with an 11 point deficit losing the game 13-- 4 In game two CEU found themselves out of this one early as well down 10-- 0 by the third inning This time the Eagles were unable to make a run at them and fell ISA "I felt the overall atmosphere of our team was good The overall OPA of the team wu good and better than last year's team" Dave Paur head coach for the Golden Eagles said Paur also mentioned that the downfall of the ball club was the lack of pitching "We had no depth especially when you're playing six games a week We usually would hang in a game for the first five innings but we didn't have a stopper” "We had a young ball dub We hit the ball well at limes and the defense was above average but we couldn't get either to produce fat key situations The errors would come when we could least afford to allow them and we only had one base hit in a crucial situation 1 think that just comes with lack of experience" Paur added This year the Golden Eagles best pitcher by far looked to be Shane Greenland with Brian Archibald also pitching well The leading hitters lor CEU: Dusty Moody 388 Will Scott 381 Devin Hathaway 357 and Jeff Jewkes 4-1- 7-- 9-- 5-- u -- 330 Coach Paur said that he will be looking to strengthen his pitching staff next year and is looking at Cyprus Emery Granger Green River Kearns and West Jordan High School's for that help The Golden Eagles did not qualify for the regional s but this year's field consists of Dixie Utah Valley Treasure Valley and Southern Idaho The tournament will be held in Ontario Ore on Treasure Valley's field The district tournament will be held May 21 and 22 in Helper with the winner of the ICAC tournament facing the winner of the Colorado league tournament play-off- Lady Eagles pickup third place in region 18 softball tournament by Dustin Nelman sports writer CEU Lady Eagles softball ended their season last weekend on a positive note finishing third in the Region 18 softball tournament “I'm really pleased with how we played and how we finished up as a team" head coach Teri Rushton commented CEU opened up the tournament with a 16-- 5 loss to the eventual Region 18 champion Snow College Badgers putting them in a light spot The Lady Eagles came out tough but lost their poise in the later innings and it cost them the game Cynthia Tadd who led the Eagles in the hitting department during the tournament went 2 for 2 in the losing cause In the second game of the tourney the Lady Eagles bounced back to crush die Northwestern Colorado Spartans 10-- 2 Marquette Eardley pitched a tough game for the Eagles leading them to a victory “Marquette pitched her best game of the season and we hit the ball real well as a team" said Rushton "and our aggressive baserunning wu also too much for Colorado to handle" In their final game CEU once (continued on page 8) 5-Brett Seaaer dives back to first bass safely In a plckoff attempt but Dixie went on to sweep the series 7 photo by Stephanie Marvldlkle 9-- m |
