Show Thursday November 2 Is by society becoming tolerant of bad manners? JD Conover staff writer Have you ever noticed that people are inconsistent deviatory and unpredictable Their biggest weak spot has go( to be what's acceptable and what's not For the most part anything that isn't acceptable is nidc obscene or bad manners Society does a pretty good job of keeping a list of things that are OK The only problem with this list is that it reminds me of a river Even though it keeps going in the same general direction it is constantly changing as time passes There was a time when drunk driving was a comical event that we used to laugh at in the movies as well as in real life Today many groups have been formed against it sliffer legal penalties have been legislated against it and an educational blit that spans from kindergarten's Dick and Jane clear to higher education's student leadership has been aired to make everyone aware of it Thirty years ago a young lady wouldn't be seen in a public place wearing a swim suit that has a lot in common with a band-ai- d Today it is a fairly common sight in many coastal and tourist areas If you don't live in a part of the worid where women compete to show the most of the least you can gel a lasting photographic memory from any one of dozens of magazines that have 'ipitalized for big profits on this new found money maker These are things that have obviously been accepted with much for some over long periods of time But there must have been a dismay turning point or a transitional period where things of this nature could earn a heading on society's list of good and bad We are constantly involved in this acceptance process What are we as a society and as individuals kiting slip through our fingers for various reasons? If we look at laziness ignorance and women's lib maybe we could place singular blame or a culmination of the above to justify the reason that men don't seem to exert the same effort as in the past to open doors for ladies anymore At CEU I see this happen enough that it disturbs me Don't worry I'm just as guilty as every other male on campus Think about it Would it take that much effort to quickly step ahead and open the door? God forbid you might put a smile on somebody's face and exchange a kind word I haven't got an iota what to label a reason for some of the poor classroom behavior I've observed and heard about To me there is nothing quite like paying good money to receive an education and then having to put up with a host of crap that really has no place in the classroom You sorry individuals know who you are too! You're the one's that always walk in like you own the place interrupting the entire class just to take care of some little bit of your own personal business What in the history of mankind gives you more importance than 30 or 40 people who arc trying to better themselves? If there's anything worse than an unneeded outside interruption it has to be an internal one from a fellow classmate I appreciate the virtual dung heaps who like to pop their knuckles two dozen times in the course of one period get bored and slam their books five minutes early as if the clock will take a hint and hurry up or lean back in their chair and with full effects yawn out loud and throw their arms up in the air just like someone on a cereal commercial These are a few of the classroom things that I see happening that shouldn't be happening for the simpk fact that it is infringing on the rights of others to receive an education But I feel we are growing more and more tolerant to things of this kind and it is in the transitional period where it could eventually get out of hand and slip through our fingers Is this something we want to end up on society's list or could we just use our heads a little and prevent it? Maybe you can accept it If that's what you want fine At least think of the people who don't want it your way Something that isn't just a problem at CEU is how we treat our debate I was appalled public performers In the 1988 with the fact that the general public could openly laugh out loud at individuals no matter hoW popular who wished to lake part in the leadership of a nation On a much smaller note it doesn't make me incredibly proud to be a member of a student body that laughs where there should be no laughter and makes the noisiest and untimely entrances and exits during such things as poetry readings I look at the way people dressed and I think about the music that they listened to in days gone by Their appearance was sharp and their music was tolerable and pleasant to all Today I see kids wearing pants that are so worn out and hole riddled that you can see the color of their underwear There are girls who wear skirts that wouldn't pass for a belt and young men with the audacity to let their hair grow dear to the middle of their back And every now and again you will see a guy with a pierced ear I heard Heavy Metal music on the top 40 the other day and realized how much we really have grown accustomed to in our tolerance levels I shudder at the thought of what our world is evolving to become Bill and Ted summed it up best when they said "Be excellent to each other" It won't kill a person to show a little courtesy or use some common sense I'd hale to see a place like Price grow accustomed to a total lack of good manners and respect Think before you belch or yell an obscene comment to your buddy across the campus but still retain your ability to be an individual Somewhere between the two there should be a fine line that will keep everyone happy Teacher strike was not waste of time and effort by Gina Howard feature editor Well it looks to me like it worked I mean here it is a month later and people are still talking about it It's still in the public's conscience (it but it's still there) Sure it caused inconvemay be on the niences for and upset many Utahns for a day or so but then wasn't it supposed to? back-burn- er Kirsten Christensen Gina Howard Kristie Eliason Richard Hickmon Cordy West Eagle Update C Hamaker Lonnie Behunin Stephanie Marra Photographers Stephanie Marvidikis Ragun Larkin Travis Mann Aimec Anderson Reporters Jenny Blackburn Krisial Fivas Jeff Jordan Corey Moser Dusty Neiman JD Conover Stephanie Bogdin News Editor Feature Editor Entertainment Editor Sports Editor Susan A Polstcr Advisor HIIIHHHHIHIMimiMMMHHHIHMMMHHtMHMNMHIINMItUHIHIH1 Colltgt ofEastern Utahand is printed rvery other Thursday fall winter and spring quarters Opinions expressed in Ihti publication may or may not reflect the official opionion of CEU 's administration faculty ftuAMmff naff Tha Eagle office is located in Room 111 of the Main Building The Eagle is the official student publication oflht I'm talking about that stunt Utah teachers pulled Sept 23 by walking off the job It worked Maybe not to the extent that the teachers wanted it to (after all Norm did end up sending the tax refund anyway but it did work Their effort was not wasted The walkout gave teachers a day to let off steam and release some of their built up frustrations (Two aspirins just aren't going to cut it anymore Teachers have been taking aspirin forever In fact they've probably built up an immunity to it by now) It also enabled them to unite Teachers realized that they all felt the same way and that they all were facing the same problems Utah's education crisis isn't just an isolated incident as tor the strike causing inconveniences that was something that couk not be helped though some district officials tried to alleviate it a bit by sending buses to schools where teachers had walked out on Friday But are strikes ever convenient anyway? I think that by causing parents the stresi and inconvenience of for instance scrambling to find day care at the last minute teachers reminded the public what size of a role schooling plays it our day to day lives and what impact it has on our social structure And with all the media covering the strike the teachers' cause received an enormous amount of attention and free publicity Also the strike gave Utahns a prelude to what could happen come January if the Utah legislature doesn't make peace with the teachers If you think about it how else but a strike were teachers going to get their point across? They've been trying for years in more publicly condoned ways to get money for education and no one would give them a dime-- or the time of day for that matter And when the slate ends up with surplus tax money what does Bangerter the governor who promised to promote education do? He sends the money back to to the tax payers instead of putting it in education where it's needed so badly What eta could the teachers do but strike? Contrary to popular belief strike day wasn't a free day or wasted day Many teachen met at Liberty Park in the afternoon for a rally where (Continued on page 8) 1989 0 Olympics from (continued page 1) build a bobsled-lug- e run speedskating rink and ski jump Opponents on the other hand like to remind us that the luge g and facilities built in more cost Calgary money to operate than they have gained from revenues They fail to point out that n the Olympics have a dollar trust fund set up with profits that will cover the operating speed-skatin- multi-millio- losses It is true that the bobsled-lug- e run at the Olympic Park generates only 8 percent of its operating ted costs or $722000 from training fees and $100 rides on the bobsled run But the Olympic Park enjoys over $3 million annually in support from the Olympic Legacy Fund The Olympic Legacy Fund is a $70 million bottomless trough which the 1988 Winter Olympics feed from Canadian sports officials say the legacy fund generates $36 million in annual revenue This stream is expected to flow virtually forever and will cover costs of operating the facilities There are still many questions that need to be answered Voters should understand that there will not likely be one source of unbias analysis Voters should remember that with every investment there will be risks involved If we choose to invest there will (continued on page 8) yearly-collec- I'm on death row Dear Editor I am a prisoner on death row at the Arizona State Prison and was wondering if you would do me a favor I have been here for over 13 years and have no family or friends on the outride to write to I was wondering if you would put an ad in your campus newspaper for me asking for correspondence Death row prisoner Caucasian male age 43 desires correspondence with either male or female college students Wants to form a friendly relationship and more or less exchange past experiences and ideas Will answer all letters and exchange pictures Prison rules require you r fidl name and return address on the outside of the en- velope Thank you Jim Jeffers BoxB-3860- 4 Florence A7 83232 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR WELCOME Bring all submissions to Main 111 by Friday Nov 10 1989 |
