I wish our American leader would celebrate the Spirit of as Neva Borden Salt Lake City Trial by Judge Dear Editor: . The disgraceful conviction of patriot John Grismore for standing up for his constitutional rights must be brought to the attention of Americans who know something is wrong with our judicial system without being able to figure what it is. The judge in effect says, You jurors decide the facts; Ill decide the law! In other words, Im going to break my oath to uphold the Constitution, and you jurors have to give up the right of independent thought and swear that youll uphold me in violating my oath, so I wont look so bad. ' Wilbur Mills warns promising that they will interpret his version of perverted law as gospel, the jury system is being ripped up the middle and junked; its true purpose is to decide right from wrong, justice from injustice; it is to consider the law and to decide if the law is too harsh, and if so to mitigate it with respect to the accused. It is the check and .balance needed to stave off tyranny and officious government. The farce that the judge will decide the law and the jury will decide the facts and then to have the defendant denied the right to even show where the statute he is accused of violating conflicts with the the supreme law of the land is to ride down Constitution the skids the socialists and liberals have prepared for the Constitution-lovin- g patriots. The prosecuting attorney should be allowed to state his version of the law. The defendant should be allowed to argue his version of the law yes, to the jury. Then the judge that revenue sharing will make - On Course JOE H. FERGUSON . Candidate for United States Congress First District, Utah We, The People America became America when the patriots took the initiative to throw off the yoke of tyranny imposed upon them by King George III. They werent commanded or paid to do so they just up and did it. The patriots won in spite of the odds, power, and money against them. They threw off the dictatorship and established a a government of the people, by the people, republic 'and for the people. When asked about the type of government they had established, Benjamin Franklin replied, A Republic if you can keep it. Our republic is being changed into a government of the politicians, by the politicians, and for the politicians, and those who finance them. The price of maintaining a government of the people, by the people, and for the people is a lot of work and sacrifice by a lot of people. We are losing control of our government by default; because enough people arent participating. To restore our republic, we are going to have to generate one of the movements the world has ever seen. greatest grass-roo- - - ts should be allowed to say, this thought Lately, ive been following the percent of all perversions of the Supreme Court and we have been ruling in all these questions of whether socialism conflicts with the Constitution. Then the jury should be the complete judge of both law and fact. The reason the judiciary throw up their hands in terror at pro-Marxi- st expensive. Worst of all, as Wilbur Mills warns, we will become dependent upon the federal government for local financing. When inevitable controls are imposed, we will have no way to turn, but to obey to surrender our local independence. We will have sold our .birthright for what looked like an easy way out. We will be bound hand and foot to federal dictation. Our local and state freedom and independence will be gone. Thank goodness, one Utah representative, Gunn McKay, is opposing revenue sharing. I salute him for favoring local control over state and community affairs. But I do not understand why Congressman McKay votes otherwise against local control when it comes to federal welfare, guaranteed annual income, wage-pric- e controls, federal subsidies. These federal control programs he votes for. In fact, his voting record is nearly 100 percent for more federal government, more federal controls, more federal spending. Why? During June and July I visited every county in the Second Congressional District, and I have yet to find an enthusiastic supporter of revenue sharing. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents ask, Why cant we keep the tax money at home in the first place, and finance and - local governments even more dependent on Washington and that local government will become so dependent that it will have to surrender itself to the future strings which the federal appropriators will inevitably propose. Tom Anderson tells the story of the hunter and his dog who were lost in the mountains. After days without food, half starved, exhausted, the hunter in desperation whipped out his knife and whacked off his dogs tail, then put it in the pot to boil. When it was cooked he ate the meat off the tail and tossed the white bones to the whimpering dog, who devoured them, then licked his masters hands in gratitude. Thats the story of revenue sharing. The federal government exacts from us its pound of flesh and expects us to jump for joy when it gives us back a few white bones. Dont kid yourself about getting back more than you put in government never makes a profit it only spends. If you are told that Utah will receive $1.44 for every dollar you pay, remember that some other state will receive $100 for every $1.44 they pay. Is Of all the poppycock imaginable! That isnt a trial by jury, its a trial by judge. It is true that under the common law the judge instructed the jury as to what the judge thought the law was. But the jury had the right to disregard the judges instructions and to override him. Now, however, with the judge trying to scare the jurors into . KEEP UTAH INDEPENDENT No Revenue Sharing the spirit of independence. If we have to sacrifice our liberty or independence for world brotherhood then we are betraying the fundamental cause our Founding Fathers fought for. - Candidate for United States Congress Second District, Utah were not fighting for 76' 4hat morally right? Is that what you want something for nothing? Next year it may be nothing for something. What assurance do you have that Utah wont be on the short end next year? One thing is for sure revenue sharing will average out to a loss. It is impossible in the long run to receive back more than you send to Washington. The answer is: Elect Congressmen who will work for less government, hence lower taxes then we will have the means and the independence to handle our own community affairs. Our slogan could be: A better Utah by the people of Utah, not by New York or Boston. Another possible slogan is: America is the best land, and Americas best is Utah. Lets keep it that way! - And it might as well start right here in Utah. This is why I am organizing my campaign to involve many citizens working in the neighborhoods, neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend. So if you live in Utahs First Congressional District, I invite you to join our campaign team. Regardless of where you live, I invite you to participate with contributions. I dont have, pr seek, large contributions, but am depending on a lot of small or moderate ones. If a sufficient number of people contribute a moderate amount, both Mark E. Anderson and I will have sufficient for our campaign needs. One newspaper carrying this column has over nine thousand subscribers. If each would contribute ten dollars, this would provide forty-fiv- e thousand dollars for Marks campaign and the same for mine. With this, we could conduct a tremendously informative and effective campaign. So I extend an invitation to you to contribute to Marks campaign or to mine. And as an extra incentive, I wish to inform you of a new IRS law whereby half of your contribution (up to $50.00) is deductible from your taxes payable. In other words, a $50.00 contribution costs you only $25.00 as you get half of it back when you file your IRS return. Isnt it worth S25.00 to you to send $50.00 to support a congressional candidate who will work FOR you instead of AGAINST you? Contributors to my campaign will receive a signed receipt and instructions on how to make the deduction. Very shortly, we are going to have to prepare our television and newspaper ads for the primary. We wish that every citizen were interested in our government. Then they would understand the issues and wide advertising would be unnecessary. But too many cast their vote for the name that is most familiar. Consequently, advertising is necessary to gain a certain segment of the vote. And those who understand the issues must support their candidate and his advertising campaign. Like the patripts of 76, many of us have to carry more than our share of the load. So if you agree with the positions I have taken in my campaign, I invite you to help in financing the necessary newspaer and television advertising necessary in the forthcoming primary election. The country you help save will be your own. Those who wish to help may send contributions and correspondence to Ferguson for Congress Committee, P.O. Box 511, Pleasant Grove, Utah 84062.
