Dedicated To The Constitution, Liberty, Morality, and Truth 250 Salt Lake City, Utah 8110 Volume 1, No. 15 October 30, 1970 wo O' V0 X Lee Says "They Want Us QUESTION: Mayor Lee , will the Gateway Amendment make it easier for the voters to understand what they are voting on when they go to the polls? MAYOR LEE: Its know what he's talking about because if he knew what he was talk-in- g about he'd know that the great evil is in Washington already and it has been brought about because of the amendments of our my opinion federal constitution where its going to complicate it more than ever because the people are not going to know, and I think it's theyve taken away the rights and powers of the people and now what they are trying to do is come in and change each state because going to be impossible for people to explain it to the public just exactly wliat they are changing, and this worries me. lm not one who believes that you've got to go out here and make a lot of changes in your constitution to make it better for the people because I m under the impression that most constitutional amend- mente are thought up by those who govern who want more power and more control and it be-comes beneficial to them and detrimental to the public. I know, during my entire lifetune there s only two or three constitutional amendments that I can say were beneficial to the Tpublic as a whole. Otherwise, who do they benefit? They benefit those who govern and we ve lost control of those who govern for that very reason. When we argue that we want to do tlus wholesale, as the Gateway Amendment, and I think it's well named, because you're just opening a gate for politicians to take more advantage of the public and take more freedoms away from the public. Now we did have a number of constitutional amendments two or three years ago and I look an active part in opposing these amendments. I talked in a mini- - her of places and reported to the radio and T.V. in opposi- to them, and I said at the time, there may be two or three these amendments that arc not really harmful to the public and tliat I don't mind. Rut, because you have so many on here, Im advising you to vole against every Mayor J. Bracken Lee one of them. Now, they apparent- ly, for that very reason, want a Gateway Amendment which will permit them to do something on a Bdlole6aiescaieandthUidefinite. , think take8 away le of ,e and th d better vote ,he no" on this amendment. I cant d one nl from the o lhe taxpayer OT the 6tandpoint . that we should adopt this -- they want to take more of the power away from the people. So, I frankly dont think he knows what he's talking about and I disagree wiLh him very much in supporting this Gateway Amendment. QUESTION: We hear talk that the constitutions of 45 or 50 of the states are being revised or are in the process of being revised or are having constitutional amendments. Do you. think there is some national, or perhaps international movement to alter the state governments constitutions? hundred argu. . QUESTION: President Haven Barlow of the state senate has intimated that the Gateway Amendment would allow us to control the activities of the fed- - eral government from interfering in states government as in the jxist. What do you think of this idea? com- - MAYOR LEE: disagree plclely with him. In other words Id To Great Change Att. General Vernon Romney A careful student of what has come to be called the "Gateway" Amendment is likely to have ambivalent feelings about it. ObMousIy, there arc many apparent virtues in the amendment. For one thing, it would replace what now is a complicated, difficult, and expensive process of amending the Constitution. This would be accomplished by providing for repeal of an entire article rather than a single section. Certainly, the original constitution had written into it many provisions w hich can be regarded as "legislation rather than basic framework material typically found in an organic act. Thus tile hands of some legislatures have been tied in the past, and may continue to be in the future, unless such material is amended out of the constitution. One would be less than truthful, too, if he refused U admit the existence in the constitution of a number of ambiguities and plain mistakes which could be removed more thoroughly and expeditiously under the new plan.
