friol corresponding secretary meeting was adjourned p m tho afternoon brought a treat for all present in the form of a lecture from dr K G maeser his subject was tho system of he considered the subject a great one not only a character sketch but the history of a system was surely great but his greatness did not consist in what the world at large consider eon sider the term his greatness stole ou mankind unawares like the growing of a tree none know just when it commenced but in time it becomes king of the forest the subject of the sketch was born in zurich in 1746 but let us go fifty years back in franco there lived a man by the name of pronounced within himself that the system of education in his time was entirely wrong hoping to make other people conclude the same and to present before their minds his ideas he published emilo in this book he describes a young man who knows nothing of society only that of his tutor nothing of books and nothing of evil influences becoming perfectly educated he learns all about nature and grows up a perfect being he is not educated by memorizing dry facts from books but by watching the bowers and birds in fact nature book set peo plo thinking though as everything else of importance it brought forth the anger of some of course a being like famile fi mile was utterly impossible but the book scattered good sued by setting the world to thinking this book fell into the hands of a man by the name ot basedow Basc dow who attempted to improve on its method he commenced a school in germany and gained the confidence of many persons in high circles but he was a low base man and brought the system into disrepute through the wrong man taking up the work people lost confidence in the whole system goethe a german poet studied the failure of basedow and wilhelm was the result wilhelm is a resurrected emilo an improved emile this work should bo read by all teachers because it represents tho foremost thought of the age jean paul juchter then gives the work a push by publishing savana this can not bo said to bo a very deep production but in many respects it is beautiful the author makes tender appeals for the little child which cannot fail to touch the heart ho implores that the poor little downcast be lifted and drawn out he appeals for all childhood and wakes the philanthropy in the breast of all who read it it now only needed some one to digest nil this aud put the best of it into practice the man came in the person of he was without means he had been raised poor and keenly felt the need of advantages education for if he had been other wipe we could not have had a pesla lozzi for bis own poverty was an element in making him the greaff man h was he gathered up the orphan children of the place and began educating them he had no way 01 living only as people helped him ho stayed with the childen and they shared alike night and day they bad no house nor books but wandered out in the open fields where they studied nature their bessona lessona were on the objects which surrounded them ho taught of the things they saw around them and not of distant and foreign things first the chil dron all worshiped him for there was never an unkind word heard ho was known far and wide as father Iozzi unfortunately however he was no boniness bo siness man ana ho became terribly in debt and left the neighborhood of course this brought sneers from the masses but another field awaited him and he found it in consequence of war a number of children had been left homeless orphans pesta lozzia gathered them up and took them to an old forsaken monastery mon astry and thero began again his labors re from the kind neighbors his fame as a philanthropist began spreading and people began to be interested in this noble soul ho afterwards moved to switzerland and opened a school to which many of the wealthy children were sent he was the father of object lessons and the first teacher who practically illustrated that the concrete must precede the abstract on one oa ho djs ted the great napoleon and ventured to ask his aid in the work ho was endeavoring to establish but napoleon could not understand nor appreciate the great educators plan and so refused him many education al reformers have appeared since apostalo zi but none is greater for he laid toe great foundation upon which all later reformers have built VV ilson at the close of prof maeyers Mae sers lecture alluded to the fact that there was a little anfin dished business which would have to be attended to he wished to know if the association desired to remunerate miss eva billings for her faithful work as secretary and treasurer the association manifested a readiness to do so and she was voted a nominal fee for services rendered the subject of a periodical and book agent for the association came up audom rawlings was elected reelected re aileon suggested that a regular choir for the association be organized with permanent chorister aad organist prof giles wa selected permanent organist and chorister it was deemed advisable to have an assistant chorister and an assistant organist mr john foote was elected assistant chorister and miss eva billings assistant organist bupt supt wilson said it would be well to bet a time for the meetings aud then all aim to get there at the appointed hoar jac was decided to begin meeting at 1030 a m and continue until 12 when the association should have an intermission of one hour and a half when the afternoon meeting should begin to continue till ten questions were
