Show PRIMARY A split in the peoples party THE DISS AFFECTED PORTION GAIN THEIR POINT ami ains in a liberal on their ticket A caucus meeting of the peoples party was held in the payson meetinghouse tuesday january 29 a m preparatory to the comine samael L page chairman of the peoples party occupied the chair and announced that the object of the meeting was for the nomination of city officers the political caucus held here two years ago was ludicrous enough certainly but the one held here last tuesday eclipsed all of the kind ever belore witnessed many who were present and witnessed the scene have bince expressed their disgust at the ridiculous proceedings an ambitious parliamentarian of the peoples party who had suffered the wool to be drawn over his eyes and be made a miserable tool by scandalous misrepresentation opened the political racket by presenting a formal resolution selling forth claims of minority representation sen tation in the city council after the peoples ticket had been judiciously considered the disaffected of the peoples party combined with the liberal faction and met in some convenient place and there formulated their resolution made a and devised their scheme of procedure it cuts that the adin object of their scheme was by parliamentary lia quirks dis franchising tin t in ones and the motions of the meeting to divide confound and weaken the peoples party and thereby enter another wedge of division and making way for liberal nominees on the peoples ticket for the better accomplishment ment of their cratta designs they sugared in on their ticket some of the peoples ticket boasting that the electors generally would swallow ticket with this kind of sweetening the faction triad their best to gag certain worthy citizens taking advantage of their present situation and by wild stamping and motion denying them right of voice of representation in a common caucus as if there was special legislation for such caucus proceedings rights that were denied corae of the peoples party were not graciously accorded to their political antagonists many of whom played in their yeas and nays and their mountings coun tings freely during the proceedings by enla time the meeting consisting of two parties in fact the peoples and the faction proceeded to the nomination of their men for city officers the following ia the t ceet of the peoples party jesso S said gentlemen our ticket is conveniently our choice we shall carry thi ticket of officers and one of oar reliable friends of the liberal party shall be seated in the city to watch them loud applause in ande imitation of cicero he exclaimed gentlemen this ticket the peoples was born in hypocrisy and cradled in deception loud cheers at this stage another pops up and saya mr chairman the man now in nomination aint qualified for that responsible place he lets cases go up on appeal for the city cant afford it you know profound silence reigns while he draws his breath he had stuffed his barrel with wadding but no powder behind it to bend it out and so fizzled now follows one with somewhat a judicial bearing dropping his cigar stump mr chairman we must vigilantly guard the interest of our party in counting numbers will tell 1 therefore move that all persons present who are franchised disfranchised dis or likely to bo shall have no voice in this caucus and as no party lines have been drawn in this meeting that all others present shall bo allowed free speech and voting hear hear hear some think eliat one of the speakers ventured an unjustifiable threat at the ecclesiastical functions of the ward when attempting in a simsy argument to show that a bishop had no feht in his ministerial capacity to constitutional rights at political proceedings not even entitled to a voice in common with other citizens in the nomination and of course election of officers for a city government if a man because he is a bishop has no rights in political matters than mini stera of other religious denomination have no such rights in america if this is really a bishops condition the american constitution ution fails to provide for it it fails to avide for the separation of the ecclesiastical from the political since in the citizen both great sovereign rights are inseparable this great charter of rights nowhere for the when and how the american citizen shall leave his garb at homo whilo ho goes and exercises his constitutional tut ional franchise at a common caucus meeting and r should be re minded that while they in their enthusiasm are exhausting their arguments slinging their odious substances at their ecclesiastical neighbor they may be at the same time slinging the substances hub stances at their own faces for aliey may be ministers and priests if not bishops careful indeed should men be in slinging about their odious matter lest they may themselves badly besmear tho constitution does provide that congress shall make no law respecting an of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridge ine the freedom of speech the faction carried choir ticket Sin caucus expressed their entire disapproval of tho scandalous proceedings alie and dodges used on caucus apy to weaken the poo dies party and to defeat their cause for the purpose of disqualifying certain ones of the party because of their situation frequently appealing from the chair in order to increase numbers by counting the mixed crowd present of non taxpayers non registered voters liberals in general all lumped in together on the opposition was a most contemptible disgrace to the peoples party it was a cheap giving uway of the party and their baube many of the clique are seen chuckling over the sale to the principal men on the faction ticket we have no objection and undoubtedly the men themselves would take more satisfaction in nomination for office the more favorable fayo rable circumstances for ohp do not know that a few miserable bile sand running sores give pain and en bence to the members of the body and injuriously unhealthy to eo biety none can deny that the present condition of this city requires a body of dolid exemplary exam plary men for calif who are not in S with the liquor traffic now plying our city A council of officers these beas far aa possible free of all affiliation with the adders and of thiis cursed demoralizing demoralising demora lising and
