have beheld a great many blanks and barren spots on which 1888 has firmly planted improvements to which we look for employment and nourishment for both mind and body of tlc alc good people of our happy burg perhaps no improvement has been more general in its nature than that wrought by the presidential election and the great tariff debate of many having merely a hazy knowledge of such affairs have been educated in that society demands every citizen to be posted in from that could have been seen many young people who are now bound in matrimony and adorning the same happy home many homes that wore childless ure now blessed with the meek like whom wo must all become before entering bea en true many dear ones have been laid away hut all progress must be made against that difficulty on morality our community or most of them havo struggled hand in hand with great success ix general improvements perhaps no city of the size of american fork in the territory has witnessed maro than this place we have had erected two beautiful roller mills many neat dwell ing sone millinery establishment streets opened etc in fact the improvements have been numerous but have hardly composed com the foundation of the great mansion of progress to be erected by the slumbering enterprise power and financial aid to be awakened in the near future to the pleasant duty awaiting them a duty that will the coroners jury he was 29 years of age and was buried on sunday the the funeral services were conducted by mormon elders the catholic priests never officiate at the funeral who do not belong to the catholic church the cormons mormons therefore are occasionally called upon to conduct the funeral services over the remains of those who are neither catholics ncr cormons mormons Mor mons and the elders always respond cheerfully to these requests WORK on our mines was suspended christmas day and every body seemed happy especially the juveniles on receiving the presents from the annual visit of equalled equal led in any pat year in the line of amusements garfes ballnow Hall now called the lehi opera house having been occupied every night in some way on monday tuesday and friday there were balls when there was a very large average attendance for the three evenings conj RO crowded as to he uncomfortable for table wednesday the negro minstrels were greeted with a good bouse thursday and saturday john S lindsay and troupe was very well patronized mr lindsay cn always depend on a good greeting in lehi the whole week there was an amount of means spent on entertainments as was never before seen verifying one fact in improvement pro viz that the day is past for lehi when the whole population was needed to make a respectable patronage for entertainment one add to this the fact that the stores have all done a rushing business and also that our wives and daughters were gorgeously clad and all go to prove that means with the people were never more plenty anc poor of lehi have been made to rejoice by the news of a carload of coal i for distribution to them a veritable boon at this season of the year this gift was brought about by the solicitation of evans our enterprising ter and gentlemanly merchants alio asked the boon of both the pleasant vaclev coal company and the denver rio grande company one donating the coal the other the freight we are glad to bo able to add that the distribution has been made without regard to churell chu relf or creed if anything those not cormons mormons Mor mons have had the advantage as to quantity to each one AT present this ward is left without regular leaders substitutes being in position brother dark remarked a short time ago that he hoped there would be no difficulties to settle for if thero were he would have to call on our neighbors 10 them oae remarked what neighbors As all im mediate neighbors seem to be in a i similar position wilh ourselves and having had BO much in this line of business the past year let us hope that 1889 will witness our town enjoying peace from that source As 1838 is so soon to leave us forever the mind naturally looks back and memory carries us to this same season a year ago then and often since tho brumb lers who by the way have seemed quite numerous were frequent in their prognostications of dire trouble and disaster that would be conr lot from various causes during 1888 especially the light fall of snow in the mountains last winter causing scarcity of water and in many instances short crops that these disasters have not been realized the evidences are before us in plenty WHEN the fact is known that some of our crops were short notably wool and yam the question may be asked from whence did the can only answer that in addition to outside revenues two crops have been abundant the past year that have been notably absent for many years previous viz fruit and these have added much in filling the gaps and some leave realized more from a few acres of seed than they would have done from guitie a farm of grain WHILE we have not been free from virulent diseases yet we have been favored over many but i the two sudden deaths of edward south wick and edwin happening so near together is without a precedent i in our past history and leaves a mark of regret for 1888 that will long be remembered THE past year must long be noted in our history with regard to S ions A clean sweep has now been made in leliand Lehi and all persons in anyway liable on the usual charge are either absent from the count yare under arrest and bonds or have already served their terms in prison WHILE the ardent has not been entirely absent it is pleasing to note that no trouble has been experienced and no arrests made although our officers have been on hand all the time As to improvements the past season haa witnessed quite a number of nice dwelling houses erected most of them being built by our well to do young people TUB old credit system to pay after harvest is almost obsolete and pay as you go is the present motto QUITE a number of couples have joined their fate and by madriago mar riago the past year retrospect I 1 EBI dec 30 1888 mount pleasant THERE was a sound of revelry of those who were at the party and by many others the search continued the whole of the night and until 10 on christmas day when the little fellow was found about half a mile south of town near the residence of brother 0 H wheelock when discovered the littile fellow was baat asleep in a small ditch ho had pulled off his coat and used it for a pillow how ho survived agthe night is a mystery as it storekeepers nere distributed to them at the close or the proceedings in the afternoon the older portion of the people met in the evening and enjoyed themselves nothing oc curing to seriously interfere with the pleasure of the assembly on both occasions the house was full to overflowing having demonstrated that a good quality of brick can be made here our people voted a tax of 1 per cent one year ago for a now brick addition to our schoolhouse which has been finished the past season and is now in use they also voted a father tax of one half of one per cent for school purposes during ahe present year which speaks well or their appreciation of the good that follows the education of our children the laet mentioned tax was for repairs etc which when completed will give our schoolhouse of three rooms a very neat and respectable appearance the year just closed the efio ale of San taquia have very good crogg ef huy and fruit considering the dryness of alio season and have
