Show THE diphtheria SCOURGE the youngest son of mr conover not expected to live since our report in Friday 3 issue that diphtheria had made its appearance in the family of mr abe conover in the second ward a number of people haye been saying that it was not diphtheria at all and that even the doci tors had visited the house and asserted tha same the same unwise persona rashly accused police officer wilkins of quarantining the house without any authority from the quarantine phy bician these rumors coining to our hearing we deemed it in the of the city and in justice ta police officer wilkins to see dr jimmona Sim mona the quarantine physician on the matter which we did yesterday in reply to a put to him the doctor said you may aay for me that I 1 have never said that it was not diphtheria at mr conover B house I 1 did say in the case of theold cst ot the two boys that I 1 could not say far certain he had got the disease bufa as to the youngest boy I 1 baw at ones that it was diphtheria plenty of it and unhesitatingly pronounced it as such did officer wilkins quarantine the premises on his own responsibility or did you authorize him to do so 1 I myself told him t do so directly I 1 saw the condition of the boys throat I 1 said to mr Wilk iua we had better get the fiad and quarantine the house which he did this statement by dr simmons entirely exonerated officer wilkins and proves to those who have made themselves extremely busy in spreading false reports around they cannot be too careful in what they say we understand this morning that the youngest boy is in a very low state and that no hope is entertained of his covery the attending nurses worked incessantly all through last night to keep the disease under control but it has now penetrated the lungs and ha is not expected to live till night the other boy has not yet developed the disease fully but he is still kept under strict quarantine |
