Show THE FOUR COMING springers to report the omnibus bill representative springer in behalf of the majority of the on territories has prepared a report which he will present to the house recommending the passage of what is known as the omnibus bill to enable the people of dakota montana washington territory and new mexico to governments and be admitted into the union dakota it says has an area of acres an estimated population in 1887 of and a taxable property valuation of it is conceded that in point of population agricultural and mineral resources and all other matters which constitute a state dakota is fully prepared for admission and in fact no other territory equally well fitted for statehood has heretofore failed of admission into the tenion this failure is attributed to the fact that all the organized efforts heretofore made in the territory have had division in view cegret is expressed that even now there are some well disposed people in the territory who will insist that dakota should not ba admitted into the union as one state and who prefer that there should be no admission until the divis ion is accomplished attention is called to the fact that acres comprising more than one fourth of the entire area of the territory is indian reservation land and excluded from the jurisdiction of the proposed state the climate in the northern portion of the territory and the character of the lands west of the missouri eiver are also stated to be such as preclude the possibility of dense population in those regions if however the indian titles should hereafter be extinguished and the population become so great as to make a single state government unwieldy congress may provide for the division into two states montana has an area of acres population estimated at and taxable property valuation in 1886 of the indian reservations ions in the territory comprise acres the area of washington territory is placed at acres of which is indian reservation land the population in november next is estimated at and taxable property in may be placed at not including railroad property inference is also made to its great mineral aud lumber resources the area of now mexico is placed at acres of which ii comprised of indian ro serrations ser rations tho official census of 1885 showed a population of and the taxable property in 1686 amounted to the growth of tho territory has been much retarded by tho unsettled condition of land titles the report concludes the four territories whose admission is pro aided vided for in the bill have population area and resources chich entitle them to admission into this union it should ia the policy of congress to admit territories into the union whenever these conditions are realized the committee therefore recommend the passage bill reported |
