Show Calf vtith artificial heart U The calf at the University Medical Center that lived for a record 174 hours with an artificial heart, died last week. As yet the cause of death is unknown, but an autopsy will be performed on (he t calf sometime near the end of the week. Doctors at Seminar Most of the doctors working on tJte calf were in Chicago at a seminar. The cause of death was not clotting. The heart performed very well, according to Mr. Peter Maughan of the center. Named Latina The calf was three months old, weighed 190 pounds and was named Latina, which is a Cherokee derivative meaning long life. Latina was one calf in a scries used for these experiments. This was the most successful one so far. These experiments are helping Dr. Hans Swart, Dr. Douglas Hill, Dr. Kolff and Dr. Clifford Kwan-Gett get closer to the invention of an- artificial heart that could be used by man. |
