Show A Call To Action THE Legislature has finished its work and as has been feared its action affecting higher education in Utah has been everything but favorable But not even the most pessimistic could have believed belie that our law-givers law would deliberately deliberately deliberately de de- throttle the institution which stands at the head of our educational system Yet this is just what they have done It would be a libel upon these representatives representatives representatives of the people and therefore a upon the people of Utah at large to say that any of them were so ignorant as to suppose that the insignificant sum of would be sufficient to support the University for the next two years Therefore we are forced to the conclusion conclusion conclusion sion that a blow has been deli deliberately aimed at the life of the University and if further proof were wanting prominent members of both of both political parties have havet t openly declared themselves to be opposed opposed opposed op op- posed to its support Years of patient struggle on the part of some of our ablest and best citizens have been expended to make this University what it is to today today today to- to day the best in the mountain inter-mountain region and one which compares well with any State University of the same age in the whole Western section and now with one fell blow all this noble work is destroyed There are only two ways to account for this action We must suppose either that our law makers were entirely ignorant of the value of education or that they allowed political and selfish motives to blind them to what men see to be the best interests of the people Again the first supposition must be discarded discarded discarded dis dis- carded for it is impossible that such dense ignorance could exist in enlightened enlightened enlightened ened Utah So we say and we blush to write it that our fair Territory suffers surfers under the disgrace of having allowed a aring a aring aring ring of politicians to trample under foot that institution which was the truest mark of her progress I It t is useless to make excuses We ourselves would for very shame hide the disgrace if it were possible ble But every objection to the University has been so fully met that it is impossible to retract The accusation of inefficiency has been proved false again and again the statement statement statement state state- ment that none of the young men and women of Utah are capable of entering upon college work even the cheekiest carpet carpet- carpet carpet-bagger bagger among the lot dare not repe repeat t more than once in the hearing of those he slanders the pretense of economy economy economy econ econ- omy is when it is considered that were appropriated to foster an industry which at best is extremely chimerical Of what benefit to us willbe will willbe willbe be all the industries under the sun if we are to be kept in ignorance If we weare weare weare are to continue to do the drudgery connected connected connected con con- with these industries while all desirable positions are filled by Eastern talent We sound the slogan of assault upon the political rings ring which are en endeavoring endeavoring endeavoring en- en to control Utah Their short reign has disgusted us The tyranny of the priesthood d was bad enough but we weare weare weare are not going to fall from Scylla to if we can help it and we think we can I The CHRONICLE has said before that if the young men of Utah are to enjoy f what many are fond of calling their 1 new-found new liberty they must in the very 4 q v beginning muzzle the detestable beast ft of political intrigue lest he devour them and their and their liberties We say so again 4 1 J and emphasize it and we call upon all 0 young men and women of Utah to join us in defending their rights against ft those who would destroy our cherished 4 f institutions and set over over us another rR f tyranny in the place of that from which they claim to have freed us |
