But disillustionment is theirs upon first sight. The beach lies in rubble... The water looks dirty... The landscape is barren... It looks as though no one seems to care about the lake and so neither do the tourists. (And then the Travel Bureau wonders why our guests only stay in the state long enough to drive through.) The lake is dying; the signs are there. Saltair, once a rousing resort, lies in ruin on the lakeshore. Kcnnecott continues to pour debris over, through and in the lake. The Silver Sands Beach does provide swimming and a boat ride with a meal. But the brine flies flourish. The water is rusty. It's a start. Or is it an end? The state of Utah recently won a Supreme Court decision to claim the mineral rights of the lake, estimated at some 90 billion bil-lion dollars. But 90 dollars worth of improvement on the shore is hard to find. The Great Salt Lake is wasting away. Something should be done. Of course, that something shouldn't necessarily turn the shoreline into in-to another Atlantic City boardwalk board-walk or into another Miami Beach hotel system. Deserted beaches reflect public's lack of interest in Great Salt Lake's under-developed beaches. Utah needs to preserve the lake's natural bcmiiy tlirouuh immediate special treatment slops. A' I M. Ml ' ..... The great lake of salt should be preserved for the ages to come. A natural wonder deserves more than the people of .Utah are doing for the Great Salt Lake. It deserves that special treatment now. If it doesn't receive it, more brine flies will flourish, more debris will flow, more tourists will leave. One of the world's natural wonders will die. That would be too bad. Vitalities like this one are : to find at brine fly-infested it Salt Lake Beach. I |
