Key chain becomes a vast filing system Hayn "Taffy" Forward's job isn't an easy one. Taffy is supervisor super-visor of the University Key Shop the man responsible for every lock in some 140 buildings on the 1168-acre campus. He will have about 10,000 keys on his chain by the end of the year. Taffy's "key chain" is actually actu-ally a vast filing system of keys which never leaves his shop. There are 2,000 keys in each of five cabinets, a weight of some 500 pounds per cabinet. "If someone needs a key duplicated, du-plicated, we make it on one of our three cutting machines," he said. New buildings mean extra work for Taffy and his three co-workers. They are now busy matching up key and lock numbers num-bers and labeling keys with room numbers and University identification ident-ification for the new Social and Behavioral Science and Mines buildings. "We have to make sure each key the construction company sends fits the designated lock," said Taffy. "We receive hundreds of keys for each building (the Physical Education Complex alone has 400 keys) and it takes a month or longer to put a new facility into lock -operating order." or-der." When there is no key for a lock, Taffy and his crew must take the lock apart to determine what combination of tumblers is used in the lock chambers and then make a key. The shop receives re-ceives an average of two requests a week to have a lock changed. Some of the requests are prompted by lost keys. Each key is stamped, "U of U Do Not Duplicate," a message mes-sage which is usually honored by other key shops. "This helps cut down on security risks," said Taffy. He added that formal key requests must be signed by a person's department chairman or supervisor. Presently the shop is responsible responsi-ble only for doors on campus and does not keep duplicates of keys for filing cabinets, desks and other furniture. Taffy estimates esti-mates that another 5,000 keys would have to be added to his "chain" if the shop were given that assignment. A 14-year veteran of the University Uni-versity Physical Plant staff, Taffy Forward has been expand- j ing his key inventory for the past 1 1 years. |
