February 20. 1996 of Basin children are immunized Tribal leaders respond to Us offer to drop Ute name Governing leaders of the Ute Indian Tribe say they will send a letter to University of Utah administration requesting yet another meeting to continue discussions on the schools use of the Ute name. "We are drafting a letter to tell them lets talk again," said Larry tribal Blackhair, Business Committee member. He added they hope to arrange another meeting with U. officials to talk about the Ute name along with the issue of educational opportunities for Ute students. Tribal leaders met last month with U. President Arthur K. Smith to discuss the schools offer to (hop the Ute name if tribal members find its use by the school to be offensive. He made the offer during u meeting he initiated with tribal leaders to discuss their request for more outreach, recruiting and Tribal officials scholarships. carried a letter to the meeting which threatened to sue U. officials for "reparations. Hie letter was drafted by tribal attorneys, and a copy was obtained lost week by the Deseret News. "The tribal leadership strongly believes that the Ute Indian people and, to a somewhat lesser extent, all Indian people have been and subjected to denigrated ridicule by the university's characterization and caricature-izatio- n of its athletic teams and mascots as the rUtes," wrote Sandra Hansen. Tribal spokesman Larry Osspooch said Ute leaders were not linking the continued use of the Ute name to scholarships either, though Smith seems to have interpreted it that way. "We are saying, "If you want to honcr us, don't paint your faces red and ride around on a horse currying a spear, but turn around and make a positive, beneficial to the Native American people of Utah," Cess pooch said. But according to Smith, the letter clearly links the continued use of the Ute name to some form of compensation for the tribe, which he considers inappropriate. If the name ofTends, it should be dropped irrespective of anything else, he said.
