Show 1 1847 47 PIONEER DIES MARCH 1 AT ROOSEVELT Mrs Sarah Thomas Said To be Last of Mormon 1 Battalion The death and funeral services of Mrs Sarah Ellen Mowrey Thomas 90 infant of 1847 Utah pioneers and believed to be the thelast thelast thelast last survivor of the famous Mormon Mormon Mormon Mor Mor- mon Battalion contingent closes a historical epoch in Utah history his his- tory The aged pioneer died March 1 I at the Ule home of her daughter Mrs Maggie Thomas Casto in Roosevelt Roose- Roose velt and the body was taken to Vernal for funeral services and burial Mrs Thomas h had d resided in Vernal since 1886 Mrs Thomas was born November November November Novem Novem- ber 28 1846 at Pueblo Colo a daughter of Norman Sharp of the Mormon Battalion who died as a 0 result of an accidental gunshot wound received before the stop in Pueblo Her mother was Mrs Martha Jane Sargent Sharp one of the few women who made the march with their husbands A detachment of nearly soldiers and a number of families comprised the detachment which stayed at t. t Pueblo through sickness sickness sick sick- ness or being disabled from the march over the plains After wintering at Pueblo they started the next spring to join the band headed by President Brigham Young and arrived in Salt Lake City July 29 1847 just five days after the original band of nf Utah pioneers Guest of Honor Mrs Thomas was a gues guest of honor at the unveiling of the Mormon Battalion monument in Salt Lake City in 1927 and was the only survivor of the battalion present Her mother married Harley Mowrey who also was the last surviving soldier of the Mormon Battalion He died in Vernal in 1920 at the age of 99 and Mrs Mowrey two months later at the age of 94 Mrs Thomas married Mason C. C Thomas on January 1 1866 He died in 1914 They resided for a number of years i In Paris Idaho She also lived as a girl for several several several seve seve- ral years in the S San n Bernardino California Mission of the L. L D. D S.
