Show TRUT H. Social life. Now while the subject of gambling is having its share of. discussion, isnt it about time the women were coming in for a little criticism as well as the men? Its not that bridge whist is a gambling game and its not because fan tan is a good thing to lose money on, that the women are to be criticised, its because they havent the true sporty spirit. A woman is a much more sordid gambler than a man usually gets to be. Who has not witnessed the strenuous struggle of a matron, presumably dignified and sedate, over a game in which nothing more or less than a paltry prize was at stake. Some women go to such lengths as to spoil the whole fun of the game, because they do not play it for the sport, nor for the skill they can show, but for the sordidness of a trifling prize. To this end they will sacrifice everything and even go so far as to play a little crooked. Other women, some of the few who do enjoy a good game aside from the outcome, say that it is the rule with this set to hurry the game when their side is behind, and allow matters to drag along when the balance is the other way. Now if some of the real leaders, and we all know who they are, despite the dispute, would begin another card season by either playing for money or leaving out tne. matter of reward entirely, the others would take courage and down me struggling ones who go into the thing for blood. A good risk is surely better than so much ill feeling. ' Jt Jt There is a story going the rounds just now which, if true, places Salt Lake in the truly cosmopolitan class of cities. It is to the effect that the really smart set of young people in town, recently wearied of the ennui of every-dadoings and sought diversion in a new and heretofore unheard of way as to this place. The men of the crowd had often been there before, but to the girls It was said to be a real revel. For the sake of having a new kind of time, they rented a streets room on one of the down-towand securing the services of some local musicians held forth there till an early hour. Now such pranks are, of course, common in San Francisco and like places where there are too many people for each one to be attending to the business of the other, but when a merry crowd want to play a prank in Salt Lake they must beware the passers by as well as the many who may witness the exits and entrances. Needless to say, they are all spotted, and some of them are kntfwn as the same who raised Cain in a restaurant about the time of the Kearns reception at the Knutsford a vhile back. The girls doubtless thought it was great doings, but to the men it was a tame affair. You dont need to teach an old dog new tricks. y n Jl jt What a lot of religion, we have on hand by Easter time. Heretofore the girls and women of the family have been left to do all the praying, knowing as Elspeth did that the men would sair need it. But now all things, are different. Monday morning services will begin down here adjacent, and the female portion of each family represented on the row" may expend its leisure shopping and planning for the gay spring time, while the heads thereof will attend to the prayers themselves. Its time there was something doing . - on the row anyway. Weve had no excitement since the time Billy Barnett was stricken. And even before that time there' was a long dry spell after Will Lawrence shoveled the coal into that chute. Maybe the boys will take to betting on the ministers and a, slight stir Will be the result The lengui of the prayers or the number of fellows on the anxious seat might be and fitting subjects for a hazard even the brokers might be interested. Jl J There are said to be a lot of cheap skates in this town, who delight in entertaining their friends with a thirty-five cent lunch. Some of them are fellows who have no need to be economical, too, and its this that makes the girls so down on them. I think I know girls pretty well, and I know they f dont expect a fellow to blow in money on every little thing he does for them, but when a man makes a regular business of paying off his debts with a cheap pot luck luncheon at his club, they mighty soon learn whether its because he needs the money, or because he is a cheap Not long ago one of these felguy. lows invited a few friends to luncheon with him at his club. The invitation was extended about four days beforehand, and, of course, the girls wore their glad rags. One may imagine they werq somewhat astonished to say the least to sit down to a catch as catch can lunch. Jt Jt The true Lenton spirit is reigning supreme in the matter of entertaining, and even at the Post where things are generally pretty lively all the year round, the fun is limited to walks and informal little suppers. The flirtation between the Girl and the Officer is still on, however, and no one has learned yet which is to be the victor. With very slight variations the affair continues just as Truth sketched it a few weeks ago, and bids fair to continue for some time, as the youth has not yet made up his mind to be turned down by the maiden. espe-pecial-ly the vacancies at Salfair before the bathing season opens, the suits this year will be more elaborate than ever before. Some are being imported, despite the hopeful predictions of the weather man, made of a rare material which would be ruined by a drop of water. Jt jt There are some excellent Lenten diversions going on in the city just now in the form of literary entertainments. The lectures given through the latter part of the week by Professor Clark and the musical interpretation to be given by Mrs. Rhodes on Tuesday are among the main features. Both have had their share of society people as patrons, and are to be recorded as social events. Others argue that on the contrary the girls are holding their own among the benedicts; and there is a thought to which some of the wise ones are holding) that the matrons wish it so. Jt Jt The idea of entertaining Sunday evening in preference to other nights is growing on Salt Lake, as evidenced by the fact that Clem Schramm and enterlove to have their husbands John Critchlow, the two comedians, so contented. chose that evening for their farewell tained and dinner to Mr. and Mrs. Frank JenJt j.
