Show 2 r I I , I RAJS' Q GOS TIME S March 19, 2013 mfflmXtz. zz: I - ,.,.- -, M I,.,-..,,- ,. they said it is the pits because their mom and dad say that the Christmas presents are birthday presents, too. How would Santa know when your birthday was? Well, enough of that subject! As you can see, I am not a big Winter fan at all. I re-member when I was little and it looked fun to go outside and play in the snow, but it was not long before you were frozen and then you would go inside and it would take some time for Mama to get our winter clothes off and our house did not have a fire place to sit by and warm up. Now that I am an adult, and now that we live in a house with a fireplace, one of the nice things about Christmas is light-ing the fire place on Christmas Eve and I truly love to do that. The fireplace does add some-thing that is extra nice and al-most spiritual, too. Occasionally, we will light the fireplace on other occasions and it is very nice and creates a nice mood. But you do not want to turn on the fireplace in the Summer. Then you forget it is even there for quite a long by Marcella Walker According to the calendar, Spring will begin on March 21 and I am more than ready for it to arrive! It seems that all of the things that make Winter live-able, such as Christmas and New Years, are too soon over and we are left with the cold months of the last part of De-cember, January, February, and March. Even though it seems like it might have been Winter since the day after Halloween, the months of January, Febru-ary, and part of March, have had more than their share of time to keep us cold. I would like to see Spring (temperature wise) begin on the day before Valentines Day and continue through June when we could go back on the normal schedule in June on the first day of Summer. Every year at this time I go through this same scenario of trying to get Spring here ear-lier and nothing has happened yet and I know it never will. Although, there are times when the weather seems a little bit like it might have a mind of its own and we'll have a few nice days in January, or in February, or in March, but hardly ever in April when even the calendar has listed that month for April Showers. I was born in May on the 8th (never mind the year) on Mother's Day and every few years my birthday is on Moth-er's Day again. This has been a bit of a trial since I have been a mother, as May 8 is sometimes Mother's Day as well as my birthday. It is kind of like having your birthday on Christmas as people are busy celebrating Mother's Day, and I am also a mother as well as a birthday girl! I still just get one present. That's not fair. I should be eli-gible for two gifts but it rarely happens. But .things could be worse. What if I had been born on Christmas Day? I could have gone my whole life without a birthday present because birth-day and the holiday would all melt into one and that would be it. I have talked to people who were born on Christmas and time and then it comes around Christmas time and it might cross your mind to light the fire-place. But what if the grandchil-dren who are still babies came along and tried to touch it? They could get injured badly and we would never forgive ourselves and so we never turn it on for Christmas when the little ones are around, and most of the time we forget all about it when my husband and I are the only ones at home. Plan on a neat summer and be sure to take a vacation at some point! Thoughts From The Garden... by Tonya LeMone "Death in the Barnyard.... " We have had several deaths in our barnyard and realized that it is all part of the cycle of life. We know dogs don't last forever and cats either. We know a chicken can die suddenly after six fruitful years. We know that not all dove eggs hatch. But, the useless killing of chickens by a raccoon is so devastating to a barnyard and a death so much harder to accept, and one I want to avenge. I continue to think of the poor chickens that had to witness such a massacre and how they must suffer from some form of animal PTSD. We have had chickens for 20 years and have never had this problem before. Thank goodness for the information available on the internet. There are many people who have faced this masked fellow in their chicken yards and have shared information to those of us who choose to raise chickens in an urban setting. If a raccoon can gain entry, he remembers that your chicken house can provide him with food and he will return time and time again to prey upon your chickens. Raccoons are very smart and are able to open latches climb fences and dig under buried barriers, which is how our chickens were attacked. The raccoons did return night after night to get their food even though we thought we had remedied the problem with a trap and secured the pen. The most important thing to protect your chickens is to secure them at night. If they can be locked in a chicken house that doesn't have just a latch but a lock, that is the safest method. There are also ways of deterring raccoons from the chicken pen. Soak rags in ammonia and lay the soaked rags around the perimeter of the pen where you suspect they are entering, or sprinkle cayenne pepper liberally around the perimeter of your chicken house. One friend said to play a radio all night and the noise distracts them thinking there are people close by. So I guess it would have to be talk radio?.... tnat would distract and scare any kind of animal off! There are also exterminators who can help or professional trappers (Daniel Boone of sorts?) The city of Lindon will provide homeowner's with a trap and if you are lucky enough to catch one, they will take care of it in their own special way. . ..but every night I set the trap and they have turned it upside down and done everything but gone into the trap. Canned tuna fish, canned cat food, anything with a strong odor is suppose to attract them. Well, it attracted them all right, right back into the chicken pen each night eliminating yet another one. We have one chicken left and have changed her name to "Lucky". We are afraid to get anymore for fear the raccoon thinks there is a full house again. Anything that has to wear a mask and preys after nightfall must be up to no good. I'm thinking I need an mp 15-2- 2 d! Just kidding, well maybe not, I don't even know what an mp 15-2- 2 is! In my research on how to get rid of raccoons this seems to be the sure cure for saving the "girls"! That's how grandpa use to handle the problem and it worked for him! See you in the garden. . .. www. l ...1.1.. j ..I. j.i in. W r 2 , a '.. . : before. I have found time. I make the time. That is the difference. Before I realized what I was missing, I'd always say, "I want to write, if I get the time..." and then it's 10 p.m. and I'm exhausted with no urge to get up to the computer. I have set aside time to write now, over other chores, or other things. This has allowed me to fill that void. I feel better about myself and I know I will reach my goals and dreams that much faster i .if I continue. . - Dreams- - take ,work. Dreams take dedication. Dreams take goals and time. We have to make the choice on whether we do everything we can to follow that dream or let it die. I wasn't ready to let mine die. I will never be ready for it to die. If it takes my whole life to get one thing published, so be it. That one thing will blow everyone's minds, including mine. I am so grateful for dreams. I am grateful for the by Marissa Moncayo Dreams are easy to give upon. Life has a way of taking you away from the path you always desired to go. It can be easy to get caught up and miss opportunities. It is easy to put off working towards a dream when there are so many other things calling for our attention and time. After having a baby there never seems to be enough time. Some days it can get overwhelming thinking .of., everything that has to get done. Other days I find myself so tired that I do not want to do anything. It is extremely hard to find time for yourself. I love being a mother. I have enjoyed every second of it. I have never felt more joy. I see the world in a new light as my daughter discovers things for the first time. It reminds me of the excitement that can be found in small things and reminds me to see the world through a bright lens instead of a dull, redundant one. Although, this is all true I felt as though something was missing. A part of me was sad and cried out that there was a void. I finally realized what it was. I had always been a dreamer, still am. I have always believed that I would follow my dreams to become an author and nothing was going to stop me. Since being pregnant, I haven't been writing as much. Since having a baby, I haven't written hardly at all. I realized I was missing this part of me. I could do all the chores around the house, take care of the baby, accomplish so much, and yet without writing, I wasn't fully complete. A lot of people have said that its okay and I will have time to write when she's older. The problem with that is I will have more and the wait would grow and grow. Yes, being a mother means sacrificing. It also doesn't entail that you should give up all things that mattered to you .unique,, .qualities that, make us eaph who we are.,;-- ; I, .am grateful for my daughter who has inspired me and motivated me in many ways. I am grateful for a husband who believes in my dreams, even more than I do at times. I am grateful for all the support I have from family and friends who push me and remind me of what I can accomplish if I stick to it. Life is meant to be enjoyed, meant to be for reaching high and soaring. Life is about dreaming. True Greatness the rest of the world and form the foundation of the greatest country in the world. The theme for the boys basketball team was "Man up" and man up they did. At the base of the flag pole which carries "Old Glory" at City Hall is a granite marker telling the meaning of the "G" on "G" Mountain. These young people personify all that is good about the "G". The people in the Strawberry City, called Pleasant Grove, can be very proud of all the good being done in our schools K-1- 2. I think it represents true greatness. '!' Perfection is nothing to sneeze about and it is. an indicator of just how good things are at Pleasant Grove High under the leadership of Principal Tim Brantley. The people in the Pleasant Grove area have much to be proud of! Sure we have problems. Sure there are some kids wasting their lives and there always have been. From the early pioneer days, they had problems with kids carving on the benches in the new tabernacle on Temple Square. Other kids were chewing Tobacco and spitting the juice on products store owners had on display in front of their places of business. Another group of kids would break windows while the people were in church. The educators and all who help with educating the kids do so much good each and every day. Even bus drivers, like Paul Maxfield, make a positive difference in the lives of these young people. The staff and coaches who helped these young people deserve a big thanks. Many of the most important lessons these young people learn will not show up on standardized tests, but they represent lessons which set America apart from home the gold and the mighty Vikings returned home with the silver trophy. As the school bus entered Pleasant Grove there was much celebration. Horns honked and people cheered. The Viking boys played their hearts out but came up short of their dream to win the championship . game. Not many days before the boy's basketball team entered the Huntsman Center to play for the championship, Viking wrestlers dominated the state wrestling tournament and brought home the gold. It was an unbelievable performance on the mat. The drum line at Pleasant Grove High also just won the state championship. These young people showed people around the state Pleasant Grove is a force to be reckoned with. Don't forget the girls brought home gold in the state volley ball tournament. These kids are competing with the top schools in the state and winning big time. Don't think all the victories are on the athletic field. There was genuine concern about having to face the mighty Vikings again for the Vikings had broken the record setting winning streak of the national champs by beating them earlier in the season.
