Show December 15, 2010 ?S TIMPANO GGtPIMES 5 Valley View Students Prepare for Christmas Festivities 1 k;'TTJ- - - ... v: : - From hallways strung with Christmas countdown chains and lights to Christmas choir performances and class-room parties, Valley View students have been preparing for their holiday celebration. Festivities will start on Thursday, December 16, when students will attend a Christmas assembly featuring the school choir, Kindergarten Snowman dance and the fifth grade recorder performance. Later that evening at 7 p.m., the school choir will give a second performance which will include a fam-ily sing-i- n. Claudine Doyle, choir director, said the stu-dents have worked very hard over the past several months ' in preparation for their up-coming performances. "The purpose of the choir is to help our students express themselves, develop an ap-preciation and love for music, and just have fun! We start-ed singing in September and have learned new songs every few weeks. The students are so excited and ready to show the school and their families what they've been practicing and we would love others to join in with us" she said. To get everyone in on the fun, the choir is hosting a sing-i- n during their perfor-mance which will allow fami-lies to sing several songs with the choir. Following the choir per-formance, families will be in-vited outside to join in on the lighting of the school Christ-mas tree. PTA President Cyd -- ney LeMone hopes the event will be a great way for Valley View families to add to their Christmas fun. "Valley View is 45 years old and this is the first time we will be lighting the school tree. To have our families there, watching our Choir perform and then participate in the lighting will be a re-ally special night" Cyd said. Thanks to Timp Rental, and the help of Paul and Inger Phelon, the lights were strung on a 45 year old pine tree at the front entrance of the school last week. Valley View students have been preparing for their holiday celebra-tion by creating chains and lights, Christmas choir performances and classroom parties. "I attended Valley View and now have three children that attend here, so I have many great memories of the school and know what a great place it is. When I heard they wanted to light the tree, I knew I could help out," Paul stated. Several local ' busi-nesses donated strands of bulbs, making it possible for the lighting to come to-gether. The students will end their week on Friday with classroom Christmas par-ties. Valley View would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! ' I The Pleasant Grove Vik-ettes are preparing for their competition season which will begin on Saturday, December 18. The Vikettes will be com-peting at three invitational com-petitions before heading to the Region Competition to be host-ed by Lone Peak High School. The Vikettes practice every morning at 6 a.m. Their prac-tice schedule consists of tedious cleaning and perfection in all of their routines. They spend much of their time working on turns, leaps, and head stands to get every detail just right. The Region that PGHS is a part of is not only tough in foot-ball, basketball, and baseball, but this region has consistently brought out champions in drill team also. Of the four teams that qualified for State last year, three of them finished in the top five at state. The Vikettes are hoping to squash the competi-tion this year and push past the stigma that has haunted them in the past. Their goal is to qualify for State and finish in the top five at the State level . If you are interested in supporting the Vikettes this year, they will be competiting at the following places : December 1 8 at Jordan High January 8 at Alta High January 15 at Murray High January 25 Region Compe-tition at Lone Peak . Gavin thinks kickball is fun because you have to work as a team. Eleven boys at Grovecrest Elementary decided to create their own kickball team. Those young men are Ammon Sly, Kodiak Trickier, Josh Jespersen, Levi Montoya, Aidan Wiseman, Adam Nor-ton, Edwin Angel, Christian Farish, Gavin Starrer, Taylor Wilson, and Sager Walker. They all are in Mrs. Sarah Day's combined fifth and sixth grade class. They call them-selves the "Pink Piggies" be-cause Ammon brought a pink kickball to school. After talking to his team-mates, Kodiak helped design the team's rt. Lance Peacock fine tuned the design and printed the for the boys. On the front of their pink are the team's name, a pig and the team motto "CATCH A BALL DAILY". On the back is the player's last name, number and the phrase "PIGGIES FOREV-ER!" Even though the team wears their on Tues-days and Fridays, they play kickball with kids from other classes every day.
