Show Valley View Walking Club Off and Running - -' .... "n ' '. -yf K" t'il', ;"T:,'.-. . L -A1 ' Despite the rain, Valley View Elementary students came ready to walk, and run, as the school kicked off their first day of Walking Club last Wednesday. Parent volunteer, Shannon Bonnett, who serves as PTA Health Commissioner, organized the club this year, which was started several years ago by another parent. "I think it's extremely important for kids to develop healthy eating and exercising habits while their young, so they will have good foundation for fitness as they get older" she stated. In past years, the Walking Club as had as many as 75 students participating at one time and Shannon hopes to see that many again. "We will be giving away great prizes throughout the year to keep the kids motivated" she said. While the club only meets once a week, Shannon says the kids get quite a workout. "We give the kids a stick each time they make a lap and record how many they have after fifteen minutes. Most kids run instead of walk, to try and get as many as they can. It's great to see them having fun with their friends and exercising." Participants' mileage will be tracked on a large map that will be displayed for the kids to see how far they've walked. Fifth grader, Ben Davis, is excited to be a part of the club. "I think it's fun to come before school and do this. It's good exercise" he said. The Valley View Walking Club meets every Wednesday from 8:15 a.m.- 8:30 a.m. on the ball fields behind the school. Wear good shoes and a jacket. In case of rainy weather, the club will meet in the gym. View Elementary students came ready to walk and run as the school kicked off their first day of the Walking Club. |
