One was near the golf course, the other on Spanish Valley Drive. Both times our Volunteer Fire Department was there within minutes, taking care of the situation. With these dry conditions and Moab and Grand County you would Eke to share? erf Times-lndepende- nt just the right winds, both of these fires could have easily blown into something huge. So, thank you very much. Grand Countys own, for doing such a great job and keeping us safe. Sincerely, Shawn Welch Moab Senegal's gain is Moab's loss Editor As they pack up to leave Moab this week. Id like to say a fond farewell and THANKS to Joseph Lekarczyk and Julie Van Domelen. Joseph has been part of the Moab community for many years now, and I think he embodies the best of the Moab spirit. Ive had the pleasure of working with Joseph both at the city during his council term, and at Channel 6. He has given countless hours to KZMU Moab Community Radio, Moab Repertory Theater, and other community organizations. He speaks his mind and takes things to heart both qualities the people of Moab seem to aspire to. Julie has been a recent and valuable addition to our town, serving on several boards and committees, and being an advocate for projects that look toward Moabs future. Senegals gain is Moabs loss. Take care friends, and come home soon! Sue Husch Moab Societal rules and regulations are a joke Letter to the Editor, Separation of State and anything is becoming impossible to distinguish these days. The State tells us how to define our lives on everything from how to create privacy boundaries on our property to brainwashing little children to the way of life by reciting a mantra every time people are allowed to gather. The State is sticking its business more and more into where it does not belong and you are letting it, even encouraging it. Fools! Sorry, I am NOT an atheist. You cannot write me off as just another Godless soul. I believe in a Creator but I refuse to name one in my own image or in an image the Shamans Judeo-Christi- an (religious leaders) have selected for me. The fact is we just dont know; we can only have faith in our own discoveries. Of course, you actually have to think to discover anything... The constitution is somewhat different although thinking about it should still be considered. The drafters of the document were very clear. KEEP THE STATE AND CHURCH SEPARATE. The court in California and Judge Ferdinand F. Fernandez were right and the 80 of the population willing to trade liberty for security will come to regret their decision, mark my words. By the way, if you are not a Christian and swear on the bible in court to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, what are you bound by? How many courts ask what would bind an individuals testimony? All our little societal rules and regulations are a joke unless you are willing to give them power. -- David L. Everist Moab Thoughts about God, the Pledge and fires Howdy Moab, With the Southwest burning and the Pledge of Allegiance being banned because of God's name being mentioned, I decided to write some more probably more mindless tripe, but I have nothing better to do right now so here goes. First off does man think he created himself? Have our egos as superior beings grown that much? Not long ago we evolved from monnow it seems athiests dekeys then pond-scuGod if even as someneed clared that we dont to to in thing believe just keep the world from y becoming totally chaotic and more We how well see can than it is now. taking prayer out of schools has worked by the amount of shootings that have occurred and didnt when kids prayed in school. They need God more then ever and so does the rest of our country, no matter what God that might be. People have to believe in something, why not something good. I believe our founding fathers used his name to give power and strength to the documents they created. It seems that some have decided to take everthing literally expanding one line to mean we should become a godless society. The use of the term separation of church and blood-thirst- state only referred to not letting government decide religion for people. Nothing more...duh. Now onto the fires. My advice to all governing bodies who protect the forests for the e popublic: dont listen to any more correct enviromental types that tell you litically not to take out dead trees and control underbrush. Just get them a cow and let them call it names since they seem to have such a dislike of bovines, forgetting somehow that cows are like large moving seed dispensers that even fertilize seeds when they drop them. That dumb statement made by one Sierra Club spokesperson, that to leave forests to their own devices and that its the nature of things to leave dead fuel amongst living trees and let them burn is just plain dumb. I think the theory has been proved speculation and not good science. Why not just say they hate logging and cut to the chase. At least then we could just flog some loggers, not lose all of our forests and have to test the bravery of our fire fighters. We know they are heroes already. And with that...roger-wilc- o over and out. Im outta here. Adios till next time. new-wav- Rocky Borreson Moab Why not in your back yard? Dear Editor, I must admit Im confused by the logic of those who are vehemently protesting the location of the Willows Supported Living Center. While in nursing school we studied Maslow's Hierarchy of Need and his Theory of Human Actualization to aid us in the understanding human needs and to, therefore, provide better care. In a nutshell, the hierarchy of needs is a theory about the needs that motivate all humans. The hierarchy is usually shown as a pyramid with the most basic needs at the bottom and the most complex needs at the top. Moving from bottom to top the needs are as follows: basic needs need for sleep and rest, food, drink, shelter, sex, and oxygen, safety from harm, for a predictable world with consistency, fairness, routine, for a sense of stabilthe need for ity and security; growth needs love and affectionate relationships, belonging to a group, and caring; the need for a desire for confidence, competence, adequacy, achievement, mastery, respect of others; desire for acceptance, recognition, reputation, appreciation, status, prestige, need to satisfy curiosity, explore, discover, find solutions, look for relationships and meaning, and seek intellectual challenges, need for beauty in surroundings, and finally, need for growth, development and utilization of potential, becoming all that one can be, Maslows studies showed that the needs at each level must be met before one can progress to the next level and that only about 1 of humans ever reaches ones full potential. Interact Clubs Willows Supported Living self-respec- t, Center has been developed to fill a need in the community. By assisting the homeless population to meet their basic needs they are allowing that population to move on toward How could a human being who is being supported and guided to meet their greatest potential be more dangerous or threatening than someone living alone under a bush? Rather than spending money on security, the nursery could provide a couple of transitional employment positions and begin training the Willows residents in a field that they could use throughout their lives. Residents in the area could volunteer in the community to gain understanding of the many issues that are faced on a daily basis by the community as a whole. Sometimes it's good to get out of your own back- yard. Please dont assume that all homeless persons have mental illnesses, are violent, have criminal backgrounds, are drug addicts, etc. Statistics show that with the current recession the homeless rates are climbing alarmingly. The most vulnerable group at this time are families. Lack of affordable housing, low paying jobs, lack of needed services, domestic violence, mental illness, poverty, and changes and cuts in public assistance programs are all factors in the increases. Watch the evening news the Enron, WorldCom, Martha Stewart criminals at the top of the heap will be fine, but what about the innocents at the bottom. They may be this years homeless and so might you! Not in my backyard! WHY NOT? Sincerely, n, Laura J. In this 1 895 photo, a group of hardy unidentified Moab deer hunters are looking tor that trophy buck. Always anxious tor the big deer hunt, early Moab residents looked forward to the opening day. From the look on the face of the man on the right, though, It appears he isn't so anxious to climb that far peak to get a shot at the big one.
