THE LIVING PHILOSOPHIES Bv R. F. COTTLE Copywrite 1957 Another Reason for Philosophies AFTER A QUARTER of a erntury of searching out philosophies of life, we of this column, read, with much interest, in the Salt Lake Tribune, Howard Whitman's splendid article, On The Bring of Goiig Mad " It one of a series of mental health. Keeping Your Sanity. Wc quote from Mr. Whitmans fourth rule of modern design for emotions. little. It wont hurt you. A person without a philosophy protoplasmic lump, but who is he? He can laugh and and drink and buy and sell and look at television, but; when the late show is over he still has his own shell to craw into to, his own pillow . What to lie on solace when the diversions are gone? Philosophize a is an interesting . . Mental illness is largely a problem of mental emptiness. A philosophy of life fills that void. It gives direction to living, purpose, most of all enthusiasm. People with these three do not go to phychiatrlsls. Try it philosophize a little. WE ARE VERY pleased that modern thinking is verifying our belief; that good philosophies of life are very desirable and helpful. We can learn mpny priceless rules of behavior from others. The human being that can learn no more has parted withi the only priceless possession in the human Inheritance. The men, women, or nations that harden in their mold, get set in their ways, crystallize their opinions and beliefs,' and swear by and live according to their routine habits such men, women or nations are old; senile decay is at hand, and In them creative evolution has ceased to function.
