Ross Sanders and a short speech by former Postmaster Earl James, the red, white and blue ribbon was cut, officially opening the new Post Office at North Main Street and 100 North. WATCHIN FORMER Postmaster Earl James cut the ribbon, opening the new Clearfield Post Office, N. Main St. and 100 N., Monday morning was Howard Stoddard, postmaster, Raymond Adams, City Councilman; Mayor O. Ross Sanders and granddaughter Wendy Chalmers and Mrs. James. More than 30 persons were at the brief ceremony and then either went in to work or to look around and then take advantage of the postal services. The first stamp to be sold over the counter was purchased by Mayor Sanders, who was accompanied by his granddaughter, Wendy MAYOR O. ROSS SANDERS with tha 1st stamp sold at the new post office, accompanied by his grand- daughter Wendy Chalmers. Chalmers. With little fuss and much efficiency, postal employes manned the two windows that were open, just as if they had always worked at their new with stations. The inner post office was carriers sorting their mail, receiving special mail and filling their trucks ready for another day of delivery. Clearfield had its first post office in 1910 as a fourth class post office. The first postmaster was Herbert E. Smith, who served from 1910 until 1922. He was followed by Albert T. Smith, who served from 1922 through 1941. Jesse D. Barlow served for 2 years, from 1941 to 1943. In April 1943, the post office became a second class post office and Carl Green served as postmaster for three months. With the rapid growth of the community, the postoffice was made a first class one in July of 1943, when Pearl Wilcox took over as postmaster. She served for 20 years, retiring in 1963. Earl James became the postmaster and served until 1972 when he, too, retired. The present postmaster is Howard F. Stoddard, who served as assistant postmaster under Mr. James. He has been the postmaster since 1972. His assistant, now the superintendent of postal operations, is Dave Underwood. Besides Mr, Stoddard and Mr. Underwood, there are 30 other employes.
