Show PCN Page SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS Pro Sports Travel After talking to Coach Roger Reid about all the travel he and his wife went through in his baseball career, you tend to feel a bit sorry for the pros, even after learning about all the money they make. Traveling was such a burden on Vern Gardner, that it was one of the big reasons why he quit pro basketball. The same principle applied with Coach Reid. It has been suggested so many times not even a 12 Roy Sun Thursday, April 1, 1976 Box Elder Tames Royals in Opener by Keith Duncan Roy failed to keep their hot weekend southern teams. Roy beat Orem 4 and Provo on Friday night. On Saturday, the Royals were bombing Orem after five innings of play. Action was stopped because of the snowstorm that hit the area 8-- 2-- 1 of baseball play afire, as they dropped their first league contest to Box Elder High last Tuesday in Brigham City. The Bees took a win and Coach Fred 8-- 3 5-- 1 Thompson wonders w hat the team must do to win a game over the Bees, after dropping the last four contests to Box Elder. This Friday, weather permitting, Roy will host Logan High in their first home Region One contest of the 1976 season. The Grizzlies past baseball history is something less than admirable, but Coach Thompson sees the Logan boys wanting a little revenge over Roy. The Royals were victorious on the grid iron, tw ice on the cage court and once on the wrestling mats. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. In last weeks Royal baseball action, the Roy team took 3 games away from Roys 4 win over Orem on Friday, featured Mike McCoys debut as a baseball player. He just returned from a painful nose operation, to steal four bases in just one game. McCoy went 1 for 2 at the plate and just plain made things happen in the leadoff spot. Jerry Ward collected one hit. Claude Payne enjoyed a good weekend, hitting 2 for 3 on Friday, including a double in that span. Rick Stonehocker jumped from his batting slump to belt a couple of doubles. The Royals collected seven hits all together. Jim McMahon was on the mound for Roy, striking out 10 batters in iust four innings of work. Ken 8-- plagiarizing journalist would dare claim originality that the letters NBA stand for Nothing But Airports. Teams bounce around like the balls they dribble, playing here one night, there the next and seemingly spending all the time in between trying to catch an airplane or some sleep. When Roger Miller composed King of the Road, he must have been thinking of a pro basketball player. NBA champion Golden State Warriors, for example, isnt running up a court, its usually walking down a concourse. Or sleeping or eating. Or worst of all, waiting, Waiting ranks high on the list of involuntary pastimes during trips. Modern sport is predicated on the airplane, more specifically the jet plane. Orville and Wilbur Wright must be credited with expansion as much as Walter OMalley and Eddie Gottlieb. And an Englishman named Frank Whittle probably had more to do with the winning and losing of games than Dr. James Naismith or Rick Barry. Whittle invented the jet turbine engine. All franchises travel, of course, They always have. They always will. But football teams play only once a week and baseball teams are usually in the same spot for a few days. That the majority of baseball and football teams travel by charter flights only facilitates movement. But hockyand basketball teams are at the mercy of commercial scheduling and, more significantly, since their seasons are predominantly in the winter, of the weatherman. When the fellow has you flying from Buffalo to Oakland, he doesnt even consider conditions in upstate New York may be similar to Antartica. and People seem fascinated by a group of men, between tall, strolling in and out of 707s or DC8s. Whats it like, an itinerant journalist is always asked, to follow a team on the road? What do these players do, the populace wonders, as if there were some mystique about an overnight stay at a Holiday Inn near downtown Buffalo or Philadelphia Civic Center? Well, basically, the players do nothing-nothinyoud ..want to do. Travel to be sure never has been easy, no matter what the mode. Snow could prevent a passenger train from swinging alqng the Great Lakes as surely as it may keep a jet from landing at Chicago. Chronicle Francis came into the game in In the second half of the doubleheader, Roy dealt Provos loss. Sophomore Kurt Bulldogs a Bennington picked up a hit, as did Jerry Ward. Claude Payne got another double and Greg Panfiloff picked up two hits, including a double. McCoy collected a single. The Royals scored a run in the first and second innings, while the Bulldogs ran across a run in the bottom of the sixth. Panfiloff yielded only 2 hits in 5 innings of work. Kelly Checketts entered the game in relief. The team stayed overnight in a motel and woke the next morning to much chillier conditions. Both Orem and Roy got five innings in before the white (laky stuff began to cover things up. Roy experienced a hot first inning, picking up five runs one several base hits and four Orem Errors. Mike McCoy picked up his two more stolen bases and had six for the lone weekend of work. The big first inning included a single by Ward, a single by Payne, a McMahon single, a long hit double by Stonehocker that knocked in two runs. Gallegos collected a single in that opening inning also. Roy batted around the order, Mike McCoy getting two at bats in the same inning. For the game. Ward has two hits and Payne had a usual hit also. McMahon had two hits and two runs batted in. Stonehocker went 2 for 2 and h2 runs batted in. Gallegos went 2 for 2. In total, Roy had 9 hits, 8 runs in just 5 innings of work. 2-- 1 Suffer first league loss Box Elder pitchers threw a three-hittat Roy last Tuesday. The two big Roy hitters, Claude Payne and Jerry Ward were held hitless. Roy picked up their lone run in the sixth inning, when Stonehocker singled and came in on the er second triple of Jim McMahon. McMahons two triples would have been clean cut homers in the Royals home park, one maybe would have cleared the seminary building. Roy stranded seven batters and had chances at several times to pull out a win. Panfiloff started the game on the mound and after escaping a disastrous first inning, Greg settled down to face 4 batters in the third and 3 batters in third inning. Coach Thompson credited the slow start of Gregs to the fact that he was not warmed up. Ken Francis came into the game in relief work and had one run earned and another one that wont be credited against him. Coach Thompson was surprised to the We wav things toook their course. played pathetic at times, when you compare it to how we played over the weekend. We had played five games and they had only 2 games under their belt. We both played under the same natural conditions, and were plainly beaten. We just have a tough time of beating Box Elder. Jimmy McMahons two triples would have been homers in our park here. It was a good sight to see those two belts. Tj.-- u I yt-- 6--0 7-- 3 g It might be a good time now to make a short apology to Coach Marcus Garrett and many of his exceptional teams in the past history of Clearfield High School. In the past months as the 1975-7- 6 cage season glided along, I tried to bring to our readers attention, just how well they were doing. Sometimes you can get carried away in a good thing and maybe that is the mistake I made. In writting about the past season, I sometimes forgot about the past teams and some of my comparisons were a bit out of line, I worked under Coach Garrett for two years, my sophomore and junior years. I really admired all he stood for as both a person and a basketball coach. I was not priviledged to witness any of his teams play before the 1973 season, and of what I have taken from other people, they were nothing short of spectacular. Ive taken in comments from other people that he started with almost nothing and made Clearfield basketball a traditional happening around Clearfield. Besides Coach Reid, he is the only other coach that any Clearfield team has had on the cage court. In all my writting, I never once tried to take away from what Coach Garrett had done and what those players had accomplished. In those years, one team took the state title, another played in the championship and lost, and still two others took the consolation title. To me, that is achievement and I have never meant to downgrade it. Even before coming to Clearfield. Coach Garrett was inspirational enough to coach two teams to the state championship at Juab High. What a record! It may have seemed that I was deriving some of credit lrom Coach Garrett, but it was not meant to be that way. All i have seen, is a young and very spirited high school basketbc coach, come to a school that was down in basket all at tha time. He worked hard and his players hard. They worked until seven oclock on several occasions, and these are the little things that people don't see. Two hours in the morning and four more in the night, is a lot of basketball, maybe even too much by some peoples standards. Here was g coach that wanted to be a winner and I saw this to. He sold his program to the community and to his players and assistant coaches. He brought great excitement to Clearfield High and it carried on into the baseball, football and basketball season again. There was enthusiasm and no one can deny that. That enthusiasm has grown to great heights in just two short years. So it's extremely w rong to compare one years team to the other year. Coach Garrett had some fantastic and awesome teams and Coah Reid has had a couple of talked about teams too. Reid has taken a bunch of students, who really had no business at all being in the tournament, to an eight place one year and a Region Two Championship the following season. So w hen I compare again, a little more careful I shall be. Clearfield High has had to superlative basketball coaches in its 16 year history and there is no sence in tearing down the success they mounted. Region Two Coaches Voice Complaints Recently, all the Region Two coaches met to discuss past seasons and set future plans for coming seasons. One topic of which they all agreed needed some further study, was allowing Region Tw o teams to play a set region every year in the playoffs. For an example you can take the just completed .basketball tournament. All Region One clubs played off against Region Four and all Region Two teams played Region Three teams. Coach Jack Hannum is very against this as is Coach Roger Reid of the basketball team. In football, Clearfield did get a Region Three school while Bountiful was pitted against a Region Four school. But how long will it last? GREG PANFILOFF experienced a slow start generally pitched a good game. Roy lost in 5-- 1 Tuesdays clash with Box Elder, but . ROY DROPPED their Region One opener last Tuesday, but the Royal personaities pictured here are sure to turn thinas around. L to R. (Mke Budke, Coach Fred Thompson, and Jim McMahon.) On March 26, Weber Basin released 100 second feet of water from the Weber River into the Inlet Channel. The water flow has caused the walleyes to begin the spawning run. Officials report that the reservoir still has an ice cover. Approximately s of the southern portion of the reservoir has a cover of ice. The ice is expected to break up soon though. The walleyes spawn each year in the spring with this run being triggered by the ice cover breaking up, the release of water from the Weber River and the two-third- , if"- water temperature warming up to 39 degrees F. Anglers are reminded of special regulations which apply to the inlet channel of Willard Bay. First rule to remember, is that the limit on Walleyes is two fish. The inlet channel is open to fishing from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST. Another key note is that anglers may use one single prong hook on any fly, bait or lure. Cost estimates of the stadium, conceived as a structure so fluid in design as to give an illusion of floating, have soared nearly five-folfrom $120 million three years ago to perhaps $650 when the final touches are added after 1 summer the July games. Copyrighted Story The figures were disclosed in a copyright story in Saturday's editions of the Montreal Star. The Star said that Drapeau and Paris architect Roger Taillibert were so unwavering in their devotion to design that not only did they reject $146 million in cost cuts hut jeopardized the construction timetable, now squeezed to completing only the d bare necessities for the Games. The stadium is a work of art, Drapeau was quoted assaying. Never, never, never did we think of changing the design It would have been like carving a beautiful stature of bronze ... and then, as costs went up, completing it with feet of wood. The Star said that Drapeau developed an "almost worshipful attitude toward Taillibert. who not only dictated design but insisted on estimating prices, negotiating contracts and influencing the selection of contractors." tppoints Architect Drapeau's stand forced the Quebec government to take over responsibility for Olympic construction from Montreal in November.
