For the past six months she has been installing telephones or changing the location of phones in residences. Her job requires that she use a screwdriver, needlenose pliers and a dozen other tools as delicately as she would a fingernail file. In addition, when she climbs poles she wears a heavy safety belt and climbing hooks on her feet. Most people are surprised when I say Im from the telephone company. They aren'ts expecting a woman, Mrs. Nelson explains. Mountain Bell Exchange Manager J. N. Nearv said the utility has filed an Affirmative Action Plan which opens all telephone company utility jobs to all employes, regardless of race, sex, age or national origin. One part of the program is a transfer plan nonwhich enables management employes to transfer to any other nonmanagement job in the company if they can pass the tests or requirements for the job.
