Show Miners Start to Work in Two East Carbon Mines The signing of a new contract in tlie east .by John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers of America, and 'Harry M. Moses, president of the Bitumin- ous Coal Operators Association, was good news to miners of the western states although these miners were not subject to a strike call on Monday if the contract negotiations had failed. The coal operators west of the Mississippi had previously agreed to abide by any contract signed by the BCOA and the UMWA and no contract termination notice had been served upon the western coal operators as these had been upon those in the east and the south. The old contract expired at midnight Saturday. The new contract is effective October 1 and runs until October 1 of 1953. Terms of the expired contract will be in effect until the new contract goes into force. James Brlnley, president of District 22, UIMWA, who is currently in Price on union business matters, reported yesterday that the official terms at the new contract are not yet known to him and probably will not be made public until the agreement is ratified by the international board of the UMWA which will be called Into session shortly for that purpose. However, word from Washington received after the signing is to the effect that the new conrd tract calls for an $1.90 per day increase in wages increase in and a the operators contributions to the union welfare fund. Moses and Lewis declined to specify the nature of the additional revisions only saying that they were not of "major importance. Good news also came for the employees of the Columbia and Horse Canyon mines n mumtornim Tuesday when they were notified to report back to work with the morning shifts yesterday. These two mines have been idled for the past three weeks because of a local disagreement Involving the physical examination of an employee by a company doctor. However, this situation was changed abruptly Tuesday upon the receipt of a telegram from John L. Lewis stating .that the issue had been discussed and that the miners were to report back to work. Mr. Brinley, when asked about this settlement, stated that the matter had been put up to fcrwis and Moses and they had agreed that the men should return to work. Mr. Brinley further stated that the man Involved In the dispute had been allowed to return to work with the others and that the issue would be again considered within the next few days by a UMWA international board member and representatives of the Geneva Steel company.
