Show YOUR FARMER'S BOY NOT QUITE SO FOOLISH AS OF YORE. The farm boy Isn't ns foolish ns he onco was. He is being shown in a great many Instances that his greatest opportunity lies in the country, Instead In-stead of being nn nlso ran in some city. Recently n country school camp was conducted conduct-ed In Michigan nnd thry nre getting into vogue nil over the country n.ul theso most "enlightened "enlight-ened of fnrm youngsters wero put to a voto as to what cnlllng they were going to follow through life. Twenty years ago every one of them would have been strong for some soft collar, city occupation. oc-cupation. But here's how they voted In 1015: Twenty-four boys decided to become farmers. Two boys decided to become engineers. 'Two boys decided to become teachers. Two boys decided to become bankers. One boy decided to become a business man. Ono boy decided to become a musician. It will bo seen that 75 per cent of the farm boys made decisions for country life. Moro proof thnt the world do move forward. Thero is reason to believe thnt the ndvent of tractors into general use on the. farm will permit per-mit deep plowing to such nn extent thnt n largo number of "abandoned farms," which are abandoned aban-doned becaUBo their owners used to exhaust the soil and make it unproductive nnd never hnd gumption enough to rcnlize whnt they wero doing, do-ing, will bo rehnbllitatcd. The-power tractor's capacity to plow deeply cnnblcs it to yank to the surfaco the good strata of soil below the poor strata, thus renowing tho soil. The point, however, how-ever, Is as yet n disputed one, somo spcclnllsts declnring it can't be done. Others say it can. It is to bo hoped that tho latter nre right. Such a development will do untold good to the ngrl-cultural ngrl-cultural wealth of the country and many states, It is notlceablo that before President Wilson announced his engagement to that Washington widow ho declared himself for woman suffrage. |
