Show I HIS BIRTHDAY I PRESENTS. I By Lola Leonard, '18. "Oh, I'm so hungry," wailed n small girl nH the wind went howling 'round tho corner of tho place she called home. Sho had been sitting there for hours, seeming to think it in as cold inside as out. Sho had hnrdly enough clothes to covor her. She had no shoes nor stockings. A young man came along with a great uann overcoat buttoned high over hiH cheat, and seemed to have no cares in tho world whatever. He was going to bring tho goose for his birthday party, for ho vsaa twenty-one. His mother wnH going to make the dessert while his sister, who had just come homo from college, was going to stuff nnd roast the goose. He had nearly stumbled over the little girl before he could recover re-cover himself. "Well, you poor little child," he exclaimed, "why don't you go home? This is no place for you!" "Oh, I have no home, Bir, but the streets, and I am so hungry." "Why the idea I Come with me and you can have all the pudding pud-ding and cakes you can eat and mother will give you some clothes." He took her by tho hand and they went on their way to purchase pur-chase the goose. They bought tho largest they could find and went home feeling very happy. While the goose was sizzling in the oven nnd the cakes and puddings were baking fast, the little girl washed and dressed. Then they repaired to the large dining room where her first wonderful dinner was spread and her hunger satisfied. Oh, how happy the young man felt as ho watched the beaming eyes and heard the thanks of tho child. This love of n child meant more to him than all the presents and congratulations he had received from his friends. |
