Carter BYU STUDENT REPORTER PROVO, Utah-Springville Red Devils desire to advance to the semi-final game Thursday Thurs-day afternoon came 5 feet short Tuesday evening with a great catch at the center field wall. It was a great sunny day to play baseball. The Springville Red Devils played a tough game against Lone Peak but lost 4 to 6. The Red Devils started off strong in the first inning. Scott Pickering led off the game with a single, then he was picked off at first base and sprinted to second and made it safely. With one out and Mark Pawelek up to bat pitcher Devan Cahoon of Lone Peak balked and Pickering Pick-ering advanced to third base. Pawelek then grounded out to the shortstop and Pickering Pick-ering scored. Alex Johnson then singled to left field. Cahoon Ca-hoon threw two wild pitches with Matt McCoy up to bat which advanced Johnson to third base. McCoy followed the wild pitches with a walk. The sixth batter in the lineup was Kirk Doxey and he singled sin-gled over second base scoring scor-ing Johnson, advancing McCoy Mc-Coy to second base. Brian Bulow then hit a fly ball about 390 feet to straight away center field. Ten more feet and Bulow would have had a 3-run homerun. Lone Peak then got up in the bottom bot-tom of the first inning. The first batter grounded out to second base. Pat Bailey then blasted a triple to deep center field. The following batter grounded out to the pitcher scoring Bailey, and then Springville got the next batter bat-ter out. So after one inning Springville was up 2 to 1. Springville got that run back that they gave Lone Peak when Trevyn Smith led off the second inning with a walk, stole second base, and then advanced to third after Cahoon balked again. Pickering Picker-ing then hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Smith. Lone Peak then brought in a new pitcher in the second inning in-ning and he got Lone Peak out of the inning. Brian Bulow pitched a good game for Springville striking out 2 of the 3 outs in the bottom of the second inning. in-ning. Lone Peak got three outs in the third inning and Bulow struck out three batters bat-ters in a row in the bottom of the third inning. Going into the top of the fourth inning the score was 3 to 1 for Springville. Springville was unable to add more runs in the fourth inning. Lone Peak made their attack and caught some breaks in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first batter of the inning in-ning struck out. Then two batters reached on walks that were very close calls. Many people thought the pitches should have been called strikes but the batters walked when the umpire called them balls. Lone Peak's Max Harris then hit a single to score a run and Ryan Huntsman followed with an infield single. A dropped fly ball in right field scored 2 more runs. The next batter walked and then Bailey hit another single to score another run. This put Lone Peak on top 6 to 3 after four innings of play. Springville responded in the fifth by scoring a run. McCoy hit a bouncing groundball that got in the sun so Lone Peak's shortstop couldn't see it. Doxey then got a single and Bulow reached on an error by the pitcher when he tried to field a bunt. Smith hit in a run with a single over the shortstop's head. Lone Peak pitcher Matt Bahr then got two strikeouts thanks to his great curveball and got the last batter of the inning for Springville to groundout. Springville made one last desperation shot in the top of the seventh. Alex Easterley came in to close for Lone Peak. Springville loaded the bases with catcher Alex Johnson coming up to bat. Johnson watched the first pitch go by and the umpire called it a strike. The next gitch was close to the zone ut it was a ball. Alex then prepared himself for the next pitch. Easterley came with his heat and John son drilled a blast to deep center field, every person in the crowd stood up, everyone every-one assumed Johnson was the game's hero, then center fielder Kurt Blain came out of nowhere, jumped, and caught the ball 5 feet short of being a grand slam and putting Springville up by 2 runs. Blain put an end to the game with an amazing catch. Lone Peak won the game 6 to 4. Springville finished the game with 4 runs, 11 hits, and an error, Lone Peak finished fin-ished the game with 6 runs, 5 hits, and 4 errors. Lone Peak's pitching had 9 strikeouts strike-outs in seven innings of work and Springville's had 8 strikeouts in six innings of work. Both teams pitched great games. Springville can still win the state championship, they just have to rise to the occasion! It is possible for them to come through the loser's bracket and win the championship. champi-onship. The 1995 Springville Red Devil State Championship Champi-onship Team came through the loser's bracket and beat Pleasant Grove twice to win the championship. It is possible possi-ble but it requires, lots of heart and lots of team unity! It can be done! Springville will continued its quest for the state championship champi-onship Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. against rival Spanish Fork at Miller Field. They must win every game for now on!
