Show UTAH SKATING TOURNAMENT JANUARY 17 Homer Christenson Visits Provo to Make Arrange- , merits for Meet. The skating tournament of the Amateur Athletic Union of America, Rocky Mountain division, which was scheduled to take place on Dtnh lake January 3, has been postponed until un-til January 17, according to Homer Christenson, director of skating. Tho heavy snow fall during the last few days was given hy Mr. Christenson as the pause for the change. The lake ice has been covered cov-ered to quite a depth with snow which is very hard to move upon short notice. This has made it impossible im-possible for Bkaters who intend to enter the tournament to get into condition con-dition for the races, or for the liocky teams to really get together. Coach Christenson came to Provo Monday to investigate conditions and to make final arrangements for the meet. He declared that the contests con-tests this year promise to be interesting inter-esting in as much as it appears that there will be a number of entries en-tries for each event. "We shall : schedule the regular Olympic contests," Coach Christenson Christen-son declared. 'These will be 500 meter race for men and the 500 meter race for women ; 1500 meter race for men ; 2500 meter race for men! 2000 meter, relay race, four men competing, each running 500 meters; fancy skating for men and fancy skating for women. "I appreciate the co-operation of the Brigham Young university in offering gold medals for the winners, in these events," Mr. Christenson continued. "Such encouragement ought to do much toward inducing young men and women to get out into out-door winter sports. "After all we are more interested in getting our young people out into in-to the open air and interested in good, clean outdor sports, than we are in any kind of ; championships. It is true that we hope, through these contests, to develop men who can' 'compete in- the. Olympic-games for Utah,1 but w-e are doubly anxious first of , all : to develop men. Ice skating is one of the .best, ways in the world to-do it ' Vi ''Those Interested in ! 1 developing supple and beautif uP figures : could do. nothing , fetter than to enter these sports where, the, entire body must co-ordinate.,, . , , , ,, . j ' The meet is to be held on - Utah lake, according to Coach Christenson; Christen-son; either at American Fork or Provo, according to the condition of the ice at the time the meet is to be lield. It is likely that snow will hnve to be removed from the ice In either case. The postponement of the meet came as a welcome bit of news to officials of the Brigham Young university, uni-versity, for an January 17 -school will be in session once more and it may be possible to organize a hockey team to represent the institution. Trovo city skaters, too, will welcome the change since the heavy snows have made practice almost impossible. |
