Show Timpanogos Hike Originator Dies . Utah's world famous mountain mighty Timpanogos will be the scene of another mass mountain climb Saturday when nearly 3000 hikers of all ages strike out for the 12,000-ft. summit. Climbers from all over the country coun-try will converge on the backside of Timpanogos the night before to watch the traditional pre-hike program - in the Theater of the Pines at Aspen Grove. At 4 a.m. the following morning the hikers will begin the 42nd annual trek up "Utah's Everest". The godfather of physical education edu-cation and athletics at BYU, E. L. "Timpanogos" Roberts, died last week, just ten days before he was to present his famous sticks at the mass hike he initiated 42 years ago. Educator, coach, administrator, author, historian, and poet, Mr. Roberts is credited with organizing the Timpanogos hike and the BYU Invitational track and field meet, the latter in 1911. |
